US Marine aircraft suffer 'mishap' off Japanese coast, search-and-rescue underway

Some media reports said the planes had taken off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, which is near Hiroshima in the south-west of the country and that the incident happened off the coast.
Six US Marines were missing following a still-unexplained mishap off the coast of Japan on Thursday (Dec 6) involving two US Marine Corps aircraft, which may have collided mid-air during a refuelling exercise gone wrong, US officials said. Search and rescue efforts were ongoing, USA and Japanese officials said. There were five personnel on board the KC-130 and two on board the F/A-18 at the time of the incident, a Marine official told ABC News.
The planes involved were an F-18 fighter and a C-130 tanker, the official said.
It says the Japanese search and rescue aircraft immediately responded to aid in recovery efforts and says the circumstances of the incident are under investigation.
