Memorial services were underway Monday to honor the late President George H.W. Bush, whose casket is set to depart Houston for a public viewing at the U.S. Capitol until Wednesday and a ceremony at the National Cathedral in D.C.

A photo of George HW Bush's service dog lying downbeat besides the casket of his old master on Sunday has spread across social media, causing an outpouring of emotion.

"He kept us flying high and challenged us to fly higher still, and he did it with modesty and kindness that would've been surprising in someone one-tenth as tough and accomplished as he was", McConnell said.

The body of former President George H.W. Bush will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol on Monday as his family and Americans mourn the loss of the 41st U.S. president.

State funerals are traditionally held for current or former presidents and other officials designated by the president.

After, he will lie in repose at Houston's St. Martin's Episcopal Church before his remains are transferred via rail to the Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University, where he ultimately will be buried.

He failed to win a second term after breaking a no-new-taxes pledge.

Donald Trump has ordered the federal government closed on Wednesday for a national day of mourning.

He will be laid to rest alongside Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years who died in April, and Robin Bush, the daughter who died of leukemia at age 3.

The speakers at this event will include his son, former President George W. Bush, former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, former Senator Alan Simpson, R-Wyoming, and presidential biographer Jon Meacham, who also eulogized Barbara Bush. His death also reduces membership in the exclusive ex-presidents' club to four: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Members of the family, including children and grandchildren, will be taking part in each service.

President Bush's spokesman Jim McGrath shared a photo of Sully and the casket captioning it, "Mission complete". Even before he arrived at his new home with Bush, Sully had his own Instagram page.

Sully is named after former airline pilot Chesley B. His body will then be transported by a special train to its final resting place, the Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.
