In a memorandum that expressed Cohen's contrition and shame and portrayed him as a man whose personal and professional lives had been shattered, his lawyers cited his cooperation with the investigation by the special counsel, Robert Mueller, whose legitimacy is regularly denounced by the president.
On Twitter on Friday he said that during his campaign he continued to run "my business-very legal & very cool".
Cohen said in court that in 2017 he submitted a written statement to Congress saying all efforts relating to the real estate project in Moscow had ceased by January 2016.
The proposal to build a skyscraper bearing Trump's name in the Russian capital ultimately did not materialise.
Cohen had pleaded guilty in August to five counts of tax evasion, one count of making a false statement to a bank and two campaign finance violations, admitting at that time he and the chief executive of a media company worked in the summer of 2016 to keep an individual from publicly disclosing information that could hurt Trump's campaign. "He's got himself a big prison sentence". Expressing repentance, contrition, and shame, Cohen asked to be spared from being sent to prison at his scheduled December 12 sentencing in a legal memorandum filed late Friday.
Papadopoulos was the first campaign aide sentenced in Mueller's investigation, and he was also the person who triggered the initial Russian Federation investigation two years ago.
"Everybody knows about this deal". "I wasn't trying to hide anything". Cohen also said he falsely told Congress he never took any steps toward traveling to Russian Federation when in fact he had discussed going there, although he never went.
"He and Client-1 also discussed possible travel to Russian Federation in the summer of 2016, and Michael took steps to clear dates for such travel", Cohen's lawyers said in the filing.
"I made these misstatements to be consistent with individual 1's political messaging and out of loyalty to individual 1", Cohen, who previously identified individual 1 as Trump, said in court.
Cohen made a surprise appearance in a NY courtroom at around 9am local time (14G) and began entering the plea.
Russian Federation has denied United States intelligence conclusions that it meddled and Trump has frequently decried the investigation as a "witch hunt".

However, the Saudi Arabian minister was less confident than previously, and he did not specify an actual cut in oil production. Wise stated that that would depend on the severity of cuts adopted by OPEC and its allies.

This week's moves by Mueller also highlight the reactionary substance of the Democratic Party's opposition to the right-wing Trump administration. And he has been ramping up his attacks on Mueller's investigation.
Trump has expressed sympathy for Manafort, Corsi and his longtime confidant Roger Stone, telling The New York Post this week that they were "very brave" for resisting the Mueller investigation. "I brought the opportunity to him and I only dealt with Michael on it", Sater told Reuters in an interview in April.
Cohen gave a statement to congressional committees past year saying the president's company pursued a project in Moscow during the Republican primary but that the plan was abandoned "for a variety of business reasons".
The lies to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and to Congress, including by Trump's former fixer and his national security adviser, have raised new questions about Trump's connections to Russian Federation, revealed key details about the special counsel's findings and painted a portrait of aides eager to protect the president and the administration by concealing communications they presumably recognized as problematic. He famously said he'd "take a bullet" for Trump. When it came to Trump, the idea would be for him to go after the convention.
Manafort is shown on August 17, 2016 with Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, just two days before he was forced to leave the campaign when allegations of money laundering and bank fraud related to his consulting work were detailed in the press.
More lies followed as prosecutors this week accused former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort of lying even after his guilty plea, though they have not said about what. "He lied to the American people".
From the outside looking in, we've assumed that Manafort has been cooperating with Mueller given the plea deal he signed.
What happened? A conservative commentator and InfoWars contributor named Jerome Corsi walked away from a guilty plea he has been negotiating with Mueller's office, he told news organizations this week.
Mr Mueller's team has asked Mr Trump about the Russian real estate deal, but it wasn't immediately clear whether that was one of the questions Mr Trump answered last week.
Trump's anger about the investigation raises the possibility that his answers might be contradicted by Cohen, Manafort and others. "Who do you believe?"
