  • Moldy Mouse Chow Delays SpaceX Dragon Launch to Space Station

Two days after launching a rocket carrying 64 satellites from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Hawthorne-based SpaceX will attempt Wednesday to launch a resupply mission to the International Space Station from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

After separating from the second stage, and firing its engines to return to Earth, a video camera on board showed the first stage spinning.

The rocket took off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 1:16 p.m. local time, a little more than 48 hours after SpaceX sent another Falcon 9 to space from the West Coast on Monday.

The mission had been a complete success until the aborted landing.

His immediate reaction was that a hydraulic pump on one of the grid fins failed.

The rocket hovered just over the water, then toppled out of view - the first failure over land in the last 12 tries, though that's not quite how one of SpaceX's top engineers painted it.

"Public safety was well protected here", he told reporters. Six spacecraft is the maximum the space station has held, according to NASA spokesperson Dan Huot. The crew-carrying version of Dragon is schedule to fly a test mission next month, and if all goes well, will carry astronauts to the station later in the year in what would be the first crewed flight from US soil since the space shuttles retired in 2011.

Besides smoked turkey breast and all the other fixings for Christmas dinner, the delivery includes 40 mice and 36,000 worms for aging and muscle studies, respectively. Besides, a study also shows that the muscles in worms are the same in function and structure to human muscles thus making them the flawless subject to carry out a study, said researcher Timothy Etheridge.

The Falcon 9 rocket launch was scheduled for Tuesday, but the night before liftoff NASA announced technicians found mold on food bars for the space station rodent investigation. More food had to be rushed in from California.
