  • Evacuations Ordered in Butte County California as the Camp Fire Expands

The video shared on Facebook by Brynn Parott Chatfield documents their drive through the fire as they attempt to evacuate from their hometown of Paradise.

Only a day after it began, the fire near the town of Paradise had grown to almost 110 square miles (285 square kilometers).

A California fire official says six major fires are burning around the state, and characterized three of them as "critical".

Malibu itself - a city of about 12,000 people and known for beachside homes owned by celebrities and millionaires - was put under an evacuation order Friday morning.

Tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee on foot after a fast-moving wildfire devastated a California town.

Thousands of residents just outside Los Angeles have been ordered to evacuate immediately as a massive wildfire advances, fanned by strong winds.

"I'm on the phone crying, talking to my husband, just hoping I can get out of there", she said. People in Paradise reported seeing much of the community go up in flames, including homes, supermarkets, businesses, restaurants, schools and a retirement center.

The Camp Fire has scorched over 28 square miles in Butte County, which is about 90 miles north of Sacramento, according to Cal Fire.

The blaze by Thursday morning had already charred 18,000 acres, forcing the evacuation of the 27,000 residents of Paradise, about 150 miles northeast of San Francisco, and other communities, Cal Fire said in a statement.

"They were abandoned because traffic was so bad, backed up for hours", Bass said.

"The flames were whipping and spreading so fast", Vaughan told CNN.

The Butte County Sheriff's Office said Friday the victims were found in the same area in the town of Paradise, near a main thoroughfare heading out of town that was consumed by flames. He said the fast-moving flames forced fire crews to shelter people at a Walgreens and other locations until flames passed through.

Dramatic footage shows flames closing in around the highways out of town and thick smoke hanging in the sky, obscuring the horizon.

At the hospital with the stranded patients, some buildings caught fire and were damaged, but the main facility, Adventist Health Feather River Hospital, was not, spokesperson Jill Kinney said.

"It's very chaotic", said Officer Ryan Lambert of the California Highway Patrol.

May said the low humidity and the dryness of trees and brush are among the reasons for the Camp Fire and also pose a potential danger in Berkeley. Herrera, who lives in Paradise with her 88-year-old husband, Lou, left a frantic voicemail at around 9:30 a.m. saying they needed to get out.

Fire ripped through residential areas and flames leapt from hospitals and schools, according to a Reuters witness, who saw a auto dealership go up in flames on a street clogged with burned out vehicles and an abandoned police cruiser.

The Camp Fire has burned more than 5,000 acres and is still very active as it is wind driven.
