  • Migrant caravan takes a break in southern Mexico

The top US general overseeing a deployment of more than 5,200 troops to the border with Mexico said on Tuesday that troop levels would rise further but declined to say how high or estimate what the operation will cost.

"The president has made it clear that border security is national security", O'Shaughnessy said, as he detailed a much larger deployment that the 800 to 1,000 troops predicted by USA officials last week.

President Donald Trump is escalating his threats against a migrant caravan traveling to the USA border, labelling the effort an "invasion" and declaring the "Military is waiting for you".

US President Donald Trump, eager to keep voters trained on immigration in the lead-up to the midterm elections, stepped up his dire warnings about the caravans, yesterday tweeting, "This is an invasion of our Country and our Military is waiting for you!" At least 1,000 caravan members have applied for asylum in Mexico, authorities say.

"We're going to secure the border", Air Force General Terrence O'Shaughnessy, the Northern Command leader, said at a news conference.

He continued his threats on Monday, tweeting, without providing evidence, that, "Many Gang Members and some very bad people are mixed into the Caravan heading to our Southern Border".

But any migrants who complete the long trek to the southern USA border already face major hurdles - both physical and bureaucratic - to being allowed into the United States. A second group of about 3,000 migrants is at the border crossing between Guatemala and Mexico, he said.

"We're going to put tents up all over the place.

We're gonna have tents, they're gonna be very nice, and they're going to wait, and if they don't get asylum they get out".

She added: "You can't start putting the responsibility of individuals on anybody but the individual who carries out the crime". Cesar Sayoc, accused of mailing 14 pipe bombs to prominent critics of U.S.

Trump denied his focus on the caravan is meant to help Republicans in next week's midterms, saying, "This has nothing to do with elections".

The United States said on Monday it will send over 5,200 troops to help secure the border with Mexico, a far larger-than-expected deployment.

.

In April, Trump ordered up to 4,000 National Guardsmen to head to the border as a different migrant caravan wound its way north.

The White House has reportedly been considering a more extensive shutdown of the border, including an executive order that would ban asylum applications by those who reach the U.S.

"These migrants need water, diapers and basic necessities - not an army division", Shaw Drake, policy counsel for the ACLU's Border Rights Center in El Paso, said in a statement. Those deployments, which primarily include military police and engineers, began Monday and will continue throughout the week, according to the document. "This is an invasion of our Country and our Military is waiting for you!"

Trump says that the USA was "going to be prepared" and that the migrants are "not coming into our country".

The Pentagon already has sent 22 miles of concertina wire to the 1,954-mile-long border, he said, and has enough additional wire to cover 150 miles.

"Please go back", he urged them, "you will not be admitted into the United States unless you go through the legal process". It remains hundreds of miles from USA soil.
