  • Hamilton says Red Bull are 'out of reach'

Since he announced his shock move from Red Bull to Renault for 2019, his results have made for sorry reading: DNF, DNF, 6th, 6th, 4th, DNF, DNF. In between, he complained of auto and tire problems, and had to fight to hold on for one of his worst finishes of the season.

"I knew it was in there somewhere - I just knew the pace was in the vehicle - Max showed that all weekend".

Only Michael Schumacher with seven F1 titles is ahead of him after his latest triumphant season.

Mercedes were on their longest win drought in the V6 Hybrid era (three races!) and Hamilton was without a victory in six grands prix - his worst run since 2016.

The Mercedes man could not match the pace set by the Red Bulls and came in behind Max Verstappen and pole-sitter Daniel Ricciardo on Saturday.

It marked Ricciardo's second race-ending reliability issue in as many weeks, in a season in which he has failed to reach the chequered flag on eight occasions. A furious jump off the line beat Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton to the first corner, and Verstappen was off and running toward an easy race for his fifth career victory.

Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, looked completely comfortable knowing he's in a ideal spot to win his fifth career Formula One championship.

But the 21-year-old endured no such problem in the closing laps of a race he led for the most part, having built up a cushion of nearly 15 seconds over Vettel.

The team constructor's championship is still up for grabs between Mercedes and Ferrari.

German governing parties punished in state election
Sunday's voting followed a state election in Bavaria two weeks ago, in which the SPD and CSU also suffered major setbacks . Angela Merkel on Monday said she was stepping down as the leader of Germany's Christian Democratic Union party.

"It's a awful moment", said Vettel, a four-time champion who has finished second two years in a row and three times in his career.

"He drove superb all year". "Five (championships) is something incredible".

"Mainly congratulated him and asked him to keep pushing for next year, I need him at his best to fight him again".

After finishing third in Mexico City, Sebastian Vettel cut short his on-track interview with Sky Sports pundit David Coulthard in order to speak to Hamilton. "The pressure that he would be under. that's a lot to ride on one's shoulders". He was in a furious fight to hold off Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel for second until smoke billowed from the back of his vehicle with nine laps to go and he surrendered.

The 33-year-old has an unassailable lead of 64 points into the concluding Brazil and Abu Dhabi races over Vettel, who has failed to add to his four world titles at Red Bull since joining Ferrari in 2015.

Fourth place was ultimately enough for Hamilton to seal the title, but it marked his worst result since July's Austrian Grand Prix, and he was nearly lapped by race victor Max Verstappen.

"The vehicle. I'll let Gasly drive it, I'm done with it".
