  • Fears for Russia probe as Trump fires Jeff Sessions

Wednesday, Trump replaced Sessions, who had recused himself from overseeing Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, with acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, who previously called Mueller's appointment "ridiculous", according to CNN.

Mueller is investigating Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 election and any collusion by Trump's campaign.

"I didn't speak to Matt Whitaker about it", Trump told a gaggle of reporters as he left the White House to fly to Paris.

On Wednesday, Trump fired the attorney general, Jeff Sessions, and named Whitaker as his replacement at the justice department.

In a letter saying the move placed the country "in the throes of a constitutional crisis", House Judiciary Committee Democrats demanded action from the panel's Republican Chairman Bob Goodlatte, and called for bipartisan legislation to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller from any effort to stymie the probe. "No matter who I put in, they go after him", he said.

"When Trump complained about the Mueller investigation, Whitaker often smiled knowingly and nodded in assent, the official said". The president said critics are only objecting to Mr. Whitaker now because he appointed him.

"I think this will be a very interim AG", McConnell said.

He also said he had not spoken with Whitaker about Mueller's probe.

At the same appearance this morning, CNN reporter Abby Phillip asked Trump if he wants Whitaker to rein in Robert Mueller.

Gonzales, who was the attorney general in George W. Bush's administration from 2005 to 2007, said he doesn't know Whitaker, his qualifications or motivations, but there's a lot that calls into question his appointment. The president claimed on Twitter that the investigation into obstruction of justice was "an illegal scam" and declared in a July 29 Twitter post and elsewhere, "There is no collusion!"

The president tweeted, "Jeff Flake (y) doesn't want to protect the Non-Senate confirmed Special Counsel, he wants to protect his future after being unelectable in Arizona for the "crime" of doing a bad job!" As Mueller's new boss, Whitaker is expected to take charge of oversight over the ongoing Russian Federation investigation, including approval of budget decisions and subpoenas.

The letter was signed by the attorneys general of Massachusetts, New York, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia. "It is imperative that the important work of the Justice Department continues, and that the Mueller investigation proceeds to its conclusion unimpeded".

"I just don't understand it because why invite this kind of criticism or scrutiny which you knew it was going to come because of the comments he's made earlier", said Gonzales.
