'Contrite' banned Australia trio should be free to play - ACA

The Tasmanian and South Australian bodies are understood to be particularly angry about being forced to vote on the re-election of the national board without the benefit of the 147-page report at the Cricket Australia annual general meeting last Thursday.

But an independent review commissioned by CA found the body to be "arrogant and controlling" and partly to blame.

"There must be a reconsideration of the harshness of the penalties", Dyer said in a statement.

"They've imposed these 12 months bans on the likes of Smith and Warner, well what ramifications have been given to Mr Sutherland and Mr Howard?"

Longstaff's findings are couched in unusually powerful terms, likening the grief felt by the Australian public to another incident of poor sportsmanship in the country's cricketing past.

"Mark is an outstanding man, who's lived and breathed Australian cricket, who's been on the Board for some time". If they can play in Toronto or Trinidad, why not in Sydney?

Australian cricket has been regularly criticised for its win-at-all-costs mentality.

Debate about Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft's suspensions has been reignited by Monday's review but Cricket Australia (CA) insist there will be no change.

'Basic fairness demands these independently verified contributing factors must now be taken into consideration and the penalties reduced'. "It's not our cricket team, it's Australia's cricket team, and I think for a little while, we lost that".

He said the players have been forced to cop "100 per cent" of the culpability over the cheating affair and that's "not fair".

Rushing Smith and Warner back for the worldwide summer might be far too extreme in one direction.

Dyer said the initiative to campaign for the stars' return is being driven by the ACA and not the players.

The idea of a second Trump-Putin summit was floated back in July. "What the schedule of that is, we do not quite know yet". Trump's performance and comments at the summit were heavily criticized, including by members of the president's own party.

Ironically, the review's most urgent recommendation was for CA and the ACA to establish a constructive working relationship within 30 days. "So the sanctions stand", said Peever at a media conference on Monday after the review was made public.

David Peever, CA chairman, said some good would come from the 42 recommendations in the report.

The players had accepted their chargers and should complete their respective bans.

"There's a range of different options and there's many different ones which have been spoken about, not just by us but by others", he said on SEN.

In fact, one passage even provides the feedback that they are "exemplary".

Dyer and Nicholson will also be expected to address concerns around the lack of participation by players in the report survey. If so, it has had the exact opposite effect, according to veteran cricket journalist Robert Craddock.

Smith and Warner were suspended from global and domestic cricket for 12 months and Bancroft was given a nine-month ban for their part in the Newlands ball-tampering scandal.

The long-awaited reviews of Australian cricket's highest echelons have rightly inflamed the shame that wrenched so many earlier this year when three members of the Test team, including the captain, perpetrated one of the most humiliating scandals in the venerated sport's annals.

"Responsibility for that larger picture lies with CA and not just the players held directly responsible for the appalling incidents at Newlands".

"Had there been a landslide of protest about their bans it could have really helped those two". Australians sweated on the outcome of the bitter pay dispute previous year.

The ACA - backed publicly by the players - wanted to maintain a shared revenue model while CA wanted to abandon it and introduce set salaries. But the ACA has made it clear the move was engineered by the union, and not the individual players.
