Police reportedly questioned Kavanaugh after bar fight in 1985

A witness to the fight said that Chris Dudley, a Yale basketball player who is friends with Kavanaugh, then threw a glass that hit the 21-year-old man in the ear, according to the police report, which was obtained by The New York Times.

That's the tale told in the September, 1985 New Haven, Conn. police report unearthed Monday by The New York Times and confirmed by other media outlets.

Retired FBI agent Chuck Stuber, who spent his career investigating high-profile political corruption cases in North Carolina, including John Edwards, Jim Black and Mike Easley, said Ludington could be an important witness in the Kavanaugh case because he calls into question the credibility of the judge's testimony at the Senate hearings.

According to the New York Times, Chad Ludington, a college classmate of Bree Kavanuagh, explained how the U.S. jurist got into a fight with a man in a bar, thinking him to be the vocalist of UB40.

Dudley denied these allegations at the time and Kavanaugh reportedly declined to tell police whether he'd thrown ice at the victim or not.

When the man told the group to leave him alone, Kavanaugh allegedly cursed and "threw his beer at the guy, " which led to a fight. Ludington claimed he often saw Kavanaugh "belligerent and aggressive" while drunk.

"I would be a hypocrite to think so", Ludington said. For his part, Kavanaugh never admitted to having a problem with his drinking.

If his Supreme Court nomination fight is like a barroom brawl, then Brett Kavanaugh is well-prepared.

United States media has reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has begun interviewing Mark Judge, Kavanaugh's former best friend and a key figure in the misconduct allegations levelled by Ms Ford.

"If I were doing the interview, I would want to get as many specifics as I could", Stuber said.

There was considerable confusion last Friday, when Donald Trump ordered a reopened investigation into the "credible allegations" against Brett Kavanaugh.

Ford alleged that Kavanaugh was inebriated at the time; Kavanaugh denied the allegations and downplayed his drinking habits, stating he occasionally had "too many beers" while pushing back on the notion that he drank aggressively.

Kavanaugh repeatedly admitted drinking beer during his committee testimony, pushing back against some members' questions about just how much he drank. In response to a statement from Kavanaugh in which he insisted that he was focused on sports and academics in school and never drank to excess, Liz Swisher, another former classmate at Yale who now works as a doctor in Seattle, said that his statements were "not credible".

Swisher describes befriending Kavanaugh during her freshman year.
