"We are certain that the plane crashed into the sea and is submerged at a depth of 30 to 35 meters", National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) head M. Syaugi told a press conference on Monday.

The aircraft was on the way from Indonesian capital Jakarta to the city of Pangkal Pinang.

"We can not give any comment at this moment, said Edward Sirait, chief executive of Lion Air Group".

Indonesia's search and rescue agency said it was "likely" all passengers and crew were killed in the accident, as it found body parts of some victims.

The Lion Air chief told reporters the plane had experienced a technical problem on a previous flight, but it had been resolved according to procedure.

"We need to find the main wreckage", he added.

The Lion Air Boeing 737 crashed into the sea off the Indonesian coast shortly after take-off from Jakarta this morning, according to SARA.

The safety records of both Lion Air and Indonesia generally have been patchy in the past, but improving more recently.

Officials said the aircraft was carrying 189 passengers and crew - 178 adult passengers, two babies and one infant in addition to two pilots and six other aircraft crew.

Lion Air is a privately owned airline dating from 1999, and is one of Asia's big budget airliners. The plane's fuselage and black box nor any of the passengers have been found at this moment.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago, is heavily reliant on air travel, but many of its airlines have a poor safety record. Suneja had 6,000 flight hours of experience and the co-pilot has 5,000 flight hours, according to news agency Bloomberg.

Indonesia's finance ministry says that 20 of its officials were on board the flight.
