Lawyers for two women who accuse Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct say they fear the FBI is not conducting a thorough investigation, as Republican leaders steer toward a decisive vote on the nomination this week. The bureau has interviewed Mark Judge, one of Kavanaugh's close friends who Ford named as having direct knowledge of the alleged attack.

She is one of three women to make sexual misconduct allegations against the judge.

He said: "Sometimes I had too many beers, sometimes others did".

As he left the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump continued to voice support for Kavanaugh but told reporters it would "not be acceptable" if the Federal Bureau of Investigation demonstrated that he had lied. On Friday, Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona broke with his fellow Republicans and said that although he supported moving Kavanaugh's nomination out of the committee, he called for the FBI to investigate credible allegations against Kavanaugh.

A report released Tuesday by police in New Haven, Connecticut, says Kavanaugh was questioned after the 1985 incident, but wasn't arrested.

The Senate's Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer of NY, says Kavanaugh seems willing to mislead senators about matters big and small to ensure his confirmation.

Flake and Sens. Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska were instrumental last week in holding up Kavanaugh's confirmation vote.

Flake voted to approve Kavanaugh in the committee's vote on Friday that sent the nomination to the full Senate, but only after he requested that the FBI investigate the sexual misconduct allegations. "It might be effective in drawing further attention to some students' objection to Kavanaugh's teaching appointment, but I don't expect him to be found to have violated Harvard University's Sexual & Gender-Based Harassment Policy based on the now known public allegations against him".

Kavanaugh struck an angry and defiant tone at the hearing. "The interaction with the members was sharp and partisan, and that concerns me", Flake said. The Committee requested that the FBI investigation take no more than a week. A spokesman for McConnell declined to clarify whether McConnell was referring to procedural votes or a final vote on confirming Kavanaugh.

Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democrats' leader from NY, accused Kavanaugh of delivering a "partisan screed" during the Judiciary Committee hearing last week.

Some Republican senators had made clear to the White House through phone calls that a severely limited investigation into Kavanaugh was not what they had in mind when they launched the probe on Friday. He needed treatment at a hospital, said the report.

A Harvard Law School spokesman confirmed that Kavanaugh would not return to teach.

A vote to confirm Mr Kavanaugh has been delayed as the FBI investigates the claims, which he denies.

Late last month, The New Yorker published a story in which Mr Kavanaugh's former classmate Deborah Ramirez claimed he exposed himself to others at a party in the early 1980s.

The FBI will also question Leland Keyser and P.J. Smyth, two people who Ford said were at the gathering of teenagers where Kavanaugh allegedly assaulted her.

She said Judge and Kavanaugh were both drunk at the time.

They said the agency had not responded to the offer to interview Prof Ford, or "a series of emails and letters in which we identified witnesses and evidence that would likely assist the FBI". Ludington said Kavanaugh cursed at the man, and that Kavanaugh's friend, basketball player Chris Dudley, threw a glass in the face of the guy they thought was Campbell. "So we are very excited for the opportunity to get our commodities out into Canada and Mexico and continue on with that great relationship", Ernst said. She also said she had seen Kavanaugh try to get girls inebriated and disoriented at multiple earlier parties so they could be raped by a " "train" of numerous boys".
