A Facebook feature that allows a user to view their profile the way others would see it allowed hackers potential access to millions of accounts, the company revealed Friday.

Ireland's Data Protection Commission, which is Facebook's lead privacy regulator in Europe, said Saturday that it has demanded more information from the company about the nature and scale of the breach, including which European Union residents might be affected.

To be sure, headlines about another hack at Facebook - it's like, on one hand, do they still surprise anyone anymore?

Facebook has more than two billion users worldwide.

If you are one of the 90-million affected accounts, you will have been logged out of the platform by now.

A hacker - or hackers, as Facebook doesn't know the number - exploited several software bugs at once to obtain login access to as many as 50 million accounts.

With those tokens, hackers could not only access users' Facebook accounts but also theoretically any other related app they've used Facebook to log-in via.

But it admitted there were technical challenges involved in streaming graphically rich content via a browser. However, the privilege to stream the game will be extended to "a limited number of participants".

The severity of this bug was that the attackers could continue using your Facebook account pretending to be the real account holders, as they had your access token to provide them actual authentication to your account.

The FBI has also been called in to investigate, with some suspecting the exploitation of three vulnerabilities in a relatively sophisticated attack smacks of state-sponsored interference.

Facebook does know who it behind the attacks.

Hackers could have also gotten into third-party applications linked to Facebook accounts, but it was too early to determine whether that happened, according to the social network.

This feature enables users to preview what their profiles look like when other users view their profiles. "These access tokens that were stolen show when a user is logged into Facebook and that may be enough to access a user's account on a third party site", he said. "The vulnerability allowed hackers to steal access tokens - digital keys that keep people logged into Facebook so they don't need to re-enter passwords". More importantly, this feature protects your account from any attackers, even if they have your password.

You can log into your Instagram account or some platforms with your Facebook account. That political consulting firm told Facebook it had deleted the information, but it hadn't.
