  • Fast-moving fire erupts north of Redding shutting down Interstate 5

A highway running the length of California remains closed near the OR border where a wildfire continues to rage.

Cal Fire spokesman Capt. Brandon Vaccaro told the Los Angeles Times two single-family residences and two combination residential and commercial buildings have been destroyed by the fire.

Stanford Earth System Science Professor Noah Diffenbaugh stated that atmospheric conditions for California wildfires are expected to worsen in the future because of the effects of climate change in California.

The 45-mile (72-kilometer) stretch of highway near the state line with OR has been closed since a fire Wednesday turned hills both sides of the roadway into walls of flame.

Before the highway is reopened, authorities have to check the safety of the pavement and cut down burned trees next to the road - some of them 70 feet (20 meters) tall - that might be in danger of falling down. The truck stop's facilities were stretched to their limits, cashier Jacob Chapman said Thursday afternoon. Relative humidities will lower into the 10-19 percent range.
