There could be more fallout on the way following Serena Williams' clash with a chair umpire in Saturday's U.S. Open women's final.

Portuguese official Carlos Ramos was accused of sexism in the aftermath of the match, which saw him involved in an escalating dispute with Serena Williams that ended with him slapping the player with a one game penalty as she lost in straight sets to Naomi Osaka in NY on Saturday evening.

"Growing up, my dad drove a Nissan, so being able to be a brand ambassador now, it feels like I've come full circle", Osaka said at a contract signing event at Nissan's headquarters in Yokohama. "I don't cheat to win - I'd rather lose", she said.

Umpires are allegedly unhappy at how 2018 US Open women's final umpire Carlos Ramos was treated during and after the match. "They're thinking, 'What if?'"

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) also supported Williams' claims, while Billie Jean King, founder of the WTA and victor of 12 grand slam singles titles, told CNN Tuesday that though Williams was "out of line", Ramos had aggravated the situation.

According to a report from Buzzfeed News, Williams was fined 4,000 USD for a coaching warning, 3,000 USD for smashing her racket on the tennis court floor, and 10,000 USD for "verbal abuse" against umpire Carlos Ramos.

On Monday, the International Tennis Federation said Ramos acted "at all times with professionalism and integrity", a statement welcomed by Ings, who was a professional chair umpire from 1986 to 1993.

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Women's Tennis Association (WTA), however, supported Williams' accusations that Ramos' actions were based in sexism.

Recently, Osaka sat down with Teen Vogue to talk all things tennis, mental health and of course, playing against her idol.

As well as winning the US Open women's singles title Osaka won $US3.8 million, but she told Degeneres that, despite not even owning a vehicle, she doesn't want to spend the money on herself.

"The umpiring fraternity is thoroughly disturbed at being abandoned by the WTA", retired umpire Richard Ings told ESPN.

Ramos has since spoken out about the backlash via Portugal's Tribuna Expresso.

"I guess I'd like to hang out with my sister - I haven't seen her since Wimbledon", said Osaka, who has become an unlikely hero in a country still reeling after a summer of deadly typhoons and earthquakes.

Ramos was unable to defend himself over the weekend as the rules prevent umpires from commenting on the matches they oversee.

"It's an unhappy situation but à la carte refereeing doesn't exist", added the 47-year-old seasoned umpire. "Do not worry about me!" "They feel that no one has their back when they have to make unpopular calls".

Ramos' umpiring career will continue as he is expected to officiate the Davis Cup semifinal matches starting September 14.
