  • Serena Williams vents her anger at umpire Carlos Ramos

Her first Grand Slam title may have been overshadowed by what happened between Serena Williams and a chair umpire, but Naomi Osaka's star is clearly on the rise after winning the US Open.

The 20-year-old kept her focus amid opponent Serena Williams' controversial clash with umpire Carlos Ramos to win 6-2 6-4.

"Until this moment in time, professional officials expected that when they made tough decisions on court they'd be fully backed by the governing bodies".

The Guardian reports, similarly, that tennis' top umpires are considering forming a union in the wake of the Williams backlash, as they were disappointed that the Women's Tennis Association and the United States Tennis Association were quick to side with Williams, and that it took the International Tennis Federation almost two days to vocalize its support for Ramos. When she smashed her racket, Ramos docked her a point.

Following the match Williams cited sexism as the reason for her punishment, claiming that she had been treated more harshly than a man would have been.

Now, Adams and Ramos have come face to face in Zadar ahead of the USA team's Davis Cup tie against Croatia where the veteran official will oversee some of the matches. The number-one-world ranked athlete threw a veritable temper tantrum on the court Saturday, which began when she incurred a penalty and escalated as she was penalized further by umpire Carlos Ramos for her behaviour.

"At the time, I did kind of think they were booing at me 'cause I couldn't tell what was going on because it was just so loud in there, so it was a little bit stressful".

Portugese newspaper Tribuna Expresso reported that Ramos had avoided walking the streets of NY on Sunday to avoid any "complicated situations". Ramos, meanwhile, was paid £370 ($480) as a "standard daily rate" for umpiring, The Times says. "You owe me an apology!" she shouted repeatedly. "It's a delicate situation, but a la carte arbitration does not exist. Don't worry about me".

Coming to his defense was the International Tennis Federation, which in a tweet hailed his professionalism. "They are all fearful that they could be the next Ramos".
