  • Several potential storms are heading West from Africa as the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season continues

"We are entering the peak of hurricane season and we know well the unpredictability and power of these storms", Cooper said. However Florence has still maintained a solid core overnight and upper air winds are forecast to begin relaxing today.

Cooper's emergency declaration makes it possible to waive the state's transportation rules so North Carolina farmers can harvest and transport their crops to market faster.

Hurricane Florence has weakened to a tropical storm but will likely strengthen again into a major hurricane and could threaten the US East Coast by next week.

Hurricane Florence maintained its Category 3 storm status Thursday as it moved toward Bermuda and potentially the East Coast. It has peak sustained winds of 65 miles per hour.

Florence is forecast to track west through the weekend, forecasters said.

Two faraway waves that may pose a bigger risk to South Florida are also expected to become tropical depressions over the weekend.

The 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season has been relatively quiet and the Cape Fear Region has gone largely untouched by any tropical systems - but that could all change next week as Hurricane Florence makes its way closer to the U.S. The weakening trend is expected to continue for a few days, and then the storm will enter an atmospheric pattern more favorable for restrengthening. The NHC said the circulation of a low pressure system located about 700 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands is well defined, but the associated shower and thunderstorm activity has not been sufficiently organized to designate the system as a tropical depression.

As of Friday afternoon, Florence continued to slowly cross the Atlantic Ocean now moving more westerly compared to northwesterly.

Florence wilted Thursday as it plowed into the subtropical jet stream. On Friday, its winds fell to 60 mph as the storm moved westward at only 7 mph about 780 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands.

This system is forecast to pass very close to the southern Cabo Verde Islands Saturday night and Sunday.

In the photos, Florence seems massive, albeit somewhat disorganized since the hurricane's eye isn't immediately noticeable and the storm has lost some of it's symmetry.
