Serena Williams cartoonist defends ‘racist’ drawing of tennis champ

  • Australian cartoonist blasted for 'racist and sexist' depiction of Serena Williams

The National Association of Black Journalists called the cartoon "repugnant", adding, "not only does it exude racist, sexist caricatures of both women, but Williams' depiction is unnecessarily sambo-like".

While some people defended the cartoon, Knight faced a backlash on Twitter from figures including British author J.K. Rowling and filmmaker Tariq Nasheed, who said it draws on racist tropes of African-Americans.

Cartoonist Mark Knight's image, published in Melbourne's Herald Sun, showed an angry Williams with exaggerated lips and tongue and a wild plume of curly hair rising from the top of her head as she stomped on her tennis racket. Williams said, "You stole a point from me and you are a thief". "All he did was depict her in satirical manner", said Zanetti.

'Rather, I think the question we have to ask ourselves is this: What is the right way to behave to honour our sport and to respect our opponents?' I saw nothing abusive or malicious. That is the one thing I would say about it'. The USTA praised Williams for her conduct after the match, whereas WTA CEO Steve Simon said that "there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men vs. women". You are the best player at the end of this event and because of the turn of events with the crowd and the booing and everything, it wasn't the way - that was the outcome I was referring to. I see that that is what cartoonists do, they exaggerate things.

Oh, and then there's the fact that they slaughtered the country's Indigenous population, tried to breed them out by stealing their children, and that whole chestnut.

"But those who seek to prosecute their antiracial agenda by identifying racism in the Knight cartoon - where it does not exist - completely miss the point of the drawing".

It appears they missed a few tweets - including one from their country's own beloved basketball player, Ben Simmons, disapproving of the drawing.

He told the Herald Sun: 'The cartoon was just about Serena on the day having a tantrum.

Dr Jason Johnson - the professor of politics and journalism at Morgan State University - says Knight's depiction of Serena as a "brooding, big-lipped, nearly ape-like" figure was unnecessary.

Mark Knight, the artist whose cartoon depiction of star tennis player Serena Williams got the internet buzzing has said that the cartoon isn't racist.

"It rightly mocks poor behaviour by a tennis legend", Johnston tweeted.

Knight had shared the cartoon on Twitter, as did the newspaper.

'She's powerfully built. She wears these outrageous costumes when she plays tennis.
