Sarah Sanders calls for investigation into anonymous op-ed author

  • Trump fires back at Bob Woodward book with statements from James Mattis and John Kelly

Merck & Co. CEO Kenneth Frazier, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, Under Armour's Kevin Plank, Alliance for American Manufacturing President Scott Paul and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka all announced their departure from Trump's business advisory councils following the controversial comments.

When asked what the president thought about talk of invoking the 25th Amendment, a process to remove the president that was mentioned in the op-ed, Sanders said the whole notion was "about as ridiculous as most of Bob Woodward's book".

"Most significant, however, were the private reactions from House Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell". None of these terms existed prior to Mr. Trump so one can say he created them in order to justify his campaign?

Trump officials have rushed to distance themselves from the op-ed and from Woodward's book, both of which depict a White House mired in dysfunction, with aides disparaging the Republican president and working to prevent him from making disastrous decisions.

In the book, Woodward cited an alleged phone conversation between Trump and Mattis in which Trump went into an expletive-laden rant against Assad and told Mattis to have him killed.

Trump himself took to Twitter to decry the exposé, saying it was a "scam". As he did with "Deep Throat" on Watergate, Woodward based his reporting in Fear on "deep background" interviews, sharing all available information without revealing the identity of his sources.

Several administration officials, including Defense Secretary James Mattis and chief of staff John Kelly, have denied the anecdotes and quotes ascribed to them in Woodward's book. Then, on Wednesday, a New York Times op-ed penned by an anonymous senior White House official claimed that a group within the administration is trying to "frustrate" parts of the president's agenda.

Seahawks safety Earl Thomas appears set to end holdout
The pressure is on the Cowboys now to make the Seahawks an offer they would accept, and so far, that hasn't happened. That has led to a stalemate that has had Seattle entertaining trade offers for Thomas since last spring.

"If that individual is in meetings where national security is being discussed or other important topics, and they are attempting to undermine executive branch - certainly that's something Justice should look into", Sanders said.

"He jeopardizes the position in the economy that experts - you know, 99.9 percent of the people say, 'Don't do tariffs; it doesn't work'".

Mattis issued a statement, tweeted at least twice by Trump, saying, "The contemptuous words about the President attributed to me in Woodward's book were never uttered by me or in my presence".

"The Woodward book is a Joke - just another assault against me, in a barrage of assaults, using now disproven unnamed and anonymous sources". Many have already come forward to say the quotes by them, like the book, are fiction. He said his book "is as carefully done as you can do an excavation of the reality of what goes on". Dems can't stand losing.

"It's not every day that someone writes, and I'm quoting, 'we believe our first duty is to this country, and the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic, '" he said.

Woodward gained journalistic fame almost five decades ago as one of the Postreporters whose investigative stories about White House corruption helped drive President Richard Nixon from office and now has written books about eight USA presidents.
