The destruction wreaked by Florence keeps growing as floodwaters keep rising.

In North Carolina, at least five deaths are related to the storm - but "several others are under investigation", Cooper said.

The Navy says the aircraft will make their way back beginning Saturday, and the ships will start to return Sunday.

President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency in SC ahead of the storm.

As North Carolina residents navigated rising floodwaters that in some places could double the 20 inches that have fallen so far, neighboring SC was bracing overnight for the brutal wallop of widespread flash flooding, whipping wind and relentless rainfall that crept across the border into the eastern half of the state before dawn.

Gov. Henry McMaster issued an executive order lifting evacuation orders for Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester and the Edisto Beach area of Colleton County effective at noon Saturday. Forecasters predicted severe flooding for parts of southeastern North Carolina and northeastern SC starting Sunday.

About 10 million people could be affected by the storm.

No. 2 Clemson and Georgia Southern got a sunny sky, mild breezes and plenty of tailgaters for the only major conference football game being played Saturday in the Carolinas and Virginia while Florence, now a tropical storm, dumped unsafe amounts of rain elsewhere across the region.

"Flash flooding will continue over portions of the western mid-Atlantic regions", the NHC said.

Ms Liu said they were looking for clues into what plant foods the Natufian people - who lived between the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods - were eating, and during the search they discovered the traces of a wheat-and-barley-based alcohol. With rivers swelling toward record levels, thousands of people were ordered to evacuate for fear the next few days could bring the most destructive round of flooding in North Carolina history.

Volunteers help rescue residents from their flooded homes on Friday in New Bern, North Carolina. More than 2.4 million people were evacuated from China's southern Guangdong province ahead of the massive typhoon, the strongest to hit the region in almost two decades. Mackie rode in a boat through a flooded neighbourhood, navigating through trees and past a fencepost to get to the Knox house.

"Amazing. They did awesome", said Knox, who was stranded with seven others, including a boy who was carried out in a life vest. "It'll be ugly, but we'll get through it", Long told NBC's "Meet The Press". "I have no idea".

Nearly a million people had lost power due to the storm by Saturday morning, 786,000 in North Carolina and 165,000 in SC, according to local utilities, and as many as three million outages have been predicted. Maximum sustained winds remained at 50 miles per hour (80 kph).

"Things are getting better slowly, and we thank God for that", White said. Rivers have burst their banks as the rain consistently falls with the slow-moving storm.

DEMA made the announcement Saturday adding that the team will deploy through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) and hopes to arrive in Raleigh, North Carolina later in the day.

Up to 40 inches of rain and storm surges pushing water inland will produce catastrophic flash flooding, the National Hurricane Centre said. Wilmington police tweeted that the father was transported to the hospital with unspecified injuries. Earlier, authorities said a man drowned after his pickup truck flipped into a drainage ditch along a flooded SC road and two people died from inhaling carbon monoxide from a generator in their home. The governor's office said a man was electrocuted while trying to connect extension cords in the rain.
