Those limitations aren't a major issue if you're doing something like watching a 360-degree video, but they don't permit more fully interactive experiences such as fancy games. That prompted a few skeptical groans from the Oculus Connect audience-probably because the Oculus Quest won't have as much computing power compared to the gaming PCs that run an Oculus Rift headset. The new system is called the Oculus Quest, and it's another standalone VR headset, much like its immediate predecessor the Oculus Go.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is off to a slow start in his mission to bring virtual reality to the masses, so perhaps it's appropriate his company's next VR headset will be called Quest.

During his brief time on stage, Zuckerberg said he believes the future of VR is tether-free, with greater degrees of freedom that open the door to more engaging VR experiences. Shipping is slated to begin next spring, and we're certain to hear more about the latest tweaks and titles in the months leading up to its release. The device features positional inside-out tracking, as well as tracking for the hand controllers.

Originally codenamed Santa Cruz, the Quest is the high-end, standalone VR headset it's been teasing since 2016.

Within Insight, there is also a feature called Guardian that is created to avoid users from bumping into walls or other objects that might be on users way when they used Quest. The display resolution is said to be 1600×1440 - Oculus' blog post refers to the Quest as using the same "best-of-class" optics as the Oculus Go, but this may refer to the lenses, not the actual per-eye resolution.

Improved sound with deeper bass and support for Touch controllers is also included with the Quest. Using the cameras alone, the headset is supposedly going to be able to track up to 4,000 square feet as to allow the user to move around.

'Last year we talked about how our long term goal is to get a billion people into virtual reality, ' he said. Oculus has instead put the tracking sensors inside the headset itself, giving you a fully wireless VR experience.
