Arizona Governor Doug Ducey will announce that former Republican senator Jon Kyl will replace John McCain in the Senate according to CNN.

Cindy McCain, John McCain's widow, tweeted Tuesday that Kyle "is a dear friend of mine and John's". The governor confirmed the news in a tweet Tuesday morning as well, saying "I am deeply grateful to Senator Kyl for agreeing to succeed his friend and colleague of so many years". The former senator-turned GOP lobbyist said during a press conference with Ducey in Phoenix that he will serve in the Senate at least until the end of the current Congress in January.

Kyl, 76, served three terms in the Senate, rising to become the number two Republican before retiring in 2013.

Arizona's other Senate seat is up for election this year, with Sen. Jeff Flake (R.). From 2007 until he left the Senate in 2013, he was the Senate minority whip.

In 2020, voters will get to decide who fills the remainder of McCain's seat through 2022. Then the seat will be up again for a full six-year term.

Ducey, a Republican, was required by law to appoint a member of McCain's party to fill his seat.

The Kyl pick could allow Ducey to have his uncontroversial caretaker - and his long-term, far-right Senate appointment, too.

Kyl, a Republican who retired from the Senate in 2012 to spend more time with his family, is now shepherding Trump's nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court. Still, he is respected among his colleagues and carries the conservative bona fides that the President needs with an nearly evenly divided Senate. One of the first votes he will cast when he is sworn in as senator will be on the confirmation of Kavanaugh to the high court.

Former Sen. Jon Kyl has been shepherding Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh through the Senate.

With a nod toward McCain, Kyl said the president's "desire to jump into the middle of or be in the middle of a fight - and by the way that reminds me of somebody - can be detrimental in the end to what he's trying to achieve".

"Kyl tended to be more conservative than McCain throughout his tenure in the Senate", Mark Jones, a political science professor at Rice University in Houston, said in a telephone interview.

He added that he doesn't "really have a relationship with President Trump" and only met him once, several months ago.

Cindy McCain made the statement on Twitter minutes before Arizona's Republican Gov. Doug Ducey was due to make the formal announcement.

His appointment now allows him to vote for the nomination.

Kyl's new stint in the Senate is not likely to last long.
