  • Hurricane Florence Is Traveling A Similar Path As A 1933 Storm That Got Very, Very Close To D.C.

Since 1851, only 10 major hurricanes have done so, and the most recent was Fran in 1996, 22 years ago. "It is still expected to be a large and extremely unsafe hurricane when it makes landfall", expected late Thursday. Among the airports commonly mentioned are those in North and SC, as well as Norfolk and Richmond, VA and Savannah, GA.

A hurricane warning is in effect from the South Santee River in SC to Duck, North Carolina.

The hurricane will weaken slightly before it makes landfall on Thursday as it encounters more wind shear, but Florence should still be a major hurricane at landfall along the central North Carolina coast.

"It's not just the coast", Mr Graham said. Forecast models suggest that more than two feet of rain could fall over the higher elevations of the Carolinas and Virginia, which would generate risky flooding downstream.

President Donald Trump exhorted residents to follow officials' instructions.

His campaign says it's canceling a Thursday event in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where he had been scheduled to stump for the Republican senate candidate, state attorney general Josh Hawley. And it looks like right (inaudible) bull's eye of the storm is due (inaudible).

The massive hurricane is closing in on the Carolinas and Virginia and could cause disastrous weather as far as Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Hurricane Florence is guaranteed to bring some rain and wind to Summerville but the main concern is whether or not we will get a direct hit.

If this is a Category 4 storm, it will be the fourth in history to ever make landfall north of Georgia (Hugo was in 1989, Gracie was in 1959, and Hazel was in 1954).

Almost all major airlines have enacted fee waiver policies ahead of the storm, which typically allow travelers flying to, through, or from storm-affected areas to rebook their flights within a certain time period free of charge.

Classified as a Category 4 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane strength, Florence stood as the most severe storm to threaten the US mainland this year and the first of its magnitude to take aim at the Carolinas since 1989, when Hurricane Hugo barreled over Charleston, South Carolina.

"A westward motion with a slight increase in forward speed is expected through the end of the week".

We will continue to update this story as more news comes in and as the storm approaches.

This photo provided by NASA shows Hurricane Florence from the International Space Station on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, as it threatens the U.S. East Coast. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has not announced any road blocks ahead of Hurricane Florence as of Monday afternoon.

By Monday morning, the NHC classified Florence as a "major" Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour.

According to USA Today, which compiled a list of the fee waivers airlines are offering in some East Coast cities, almost every major airline is giving affected passengers at least a one-time break on changing their plans. The National Hurricane Center indicated that Florence could soon be approaching Category 5 storm strength. No hurricane has made landfall as a Category 5 in this region on record.

Florence was producing large swells expected to reach from the northern Caribbean to the southern coasts of Canada's maritime provinces.

Weather models have Florence striking the Carolina coast as a category 3 hurricane. The storm was moving west at 13 miles per hour, the hurricane center said.
