British Airways Says Customers' Financial Data Was Hacked In 380000 Transactions

  • British Airways breach sees hackers take-off with customers' payment details

Hackers obtained the credit card details of some 380,000 British Airways travellers during a two-week data breach this summer that leaves the customers vulnerable to financial fraud, the airline says.

The breach covered customers who made bookings between August 21 and September 5, IAG said.

The cybercriminals stole customer data British Airways website and mobile apps.

The airline could face fines of us to four per cent of its global annual revenue for mishandling its customer data under the recent GDPR data protection laws. We take very seriously the safety of our customer data, "said Alex Cruz, president and executive director of the company". British Airways is contacting customers who were affected, recommending that they get in touch with their bank or credit card company.

According to Paul Farrington, director of EMEA at app security company CA Veracode: "The BA breach is another example of how, as the amount of personal data held by organisations continues to grow, hackers are finding more sophisticated ways to gain access to this data and use it to make a profit".

Customers' banking information was compromised, but no travel information. "According to reports, BA has reported the breach quickly and in a highly professional manner", he said.

British Airways said personal and financial details of customers making bookings had been compromised.

"I cancelled my card as soon as I heard about the breach on the news".

The agreement means that British Airways customers will now be able to visit 13 new destinations across the region, opening up cities such as Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Goa, Kolkata, Kochi, and Pune, that have previously been more hard to access from the UK.

The company's statement and FAQ page did not reveal how many customers were affected by the infiltration, but British Airways representatives told Gizmodo and other outlets that the number of "card payments" is now believed to be around 380,000.

"No, our data is encrypted", he said.

"We will be contacting customers and will manage any claims on an individual basis", the company added.

Under new data protection rules, the airline was obliged to issue a breach notification within 72 hours of it being detected.

The carrier also said they were investigating the event with the police and cyber specialists, and had reported it to the Information Commissioner. Back in July, BA formally apologized after dozens of flights were canceled, and in June, 2,000 British Airways passengers had their tickets canceled because the ticket prices were too low. The stolen data did not include travel or passport information.
