  • Apple event expected to reveal 3 new iPhones, changes to Apple Watch

The new version, called Apple Watch Series 4, has larger screens that fit into the same overall watch sizes, and new health sensors and apps such as an electrocardiogram, or ECG, monitor. But perhaps most notably, the Apple Watch now lets users perform an electrocardiogram, or EKG, making the Apple Watch Series 4 the first FDA-approved, over-the-counter EKG consumer device.

When I strapped the Apple Watch Series 4 to my wrist following Apple's iPhone event today (Sept. 12), the first thing I noticed was the watch's oversized display. There's also a new accelerometer and gyroscope that Apple reckons can sample motion data up to eight times faster than Series 3. That's a 64-bit Dual-Core processor, designed by Apple to be up to 2x faster than its predecessor.

"Apple Watch has become an intelligent guardian for your health", chief operating officer Jeff Williams said.

In his keynote address during the launch, its CEO Cook said that the launch of new models of Apple products has brought an end to the anxious wait of millions of fans who have been looking forward to the next-generation iPhones and watches for about a year. The starting price is $279, while the Global Positioning System version costs $399 and the cellular variant begins at $499.

Along with the three aluminium finishes anodised in silver, gold and space grey, Apple Watch Series 4 will also come in a gold stainless steel with matching Milanese band, joining the silver and space black stainless steel models. Alternatively, customers can also pick up in Watch 4 in stainless steel case or a new gold stainless colour.

THE Apple smartwatch could become something of a doctor on your wrist after Apple revealed new medical sensors created to warn wearers of heart conditions they might not yet know about. It can help detect and classify heart rhythms using the new S4, even atrial fibrillation, and give you the data in an accessible way to share with your doctor. In 16 of those regions, 34 carriers will have the cellular version from $499.

Irregular heart rhythm and ECG features will be available to USA customers "later this year", Williams said. The Apple Watch also intermittently analyzes heartbeats in the background for irregularities, or if it exceeds or falls below a specified threshold.

There are a few new watch faces designs, but they all seem too noisy for my tastes. Instead, the Apple Watch Series 4 can detect if its owner falls over. You can set it up to automatically call emergency services and contact your loved ones. Despite the power, it still has an 18 hour battery life.

Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS) will be available to order from September 14 in 26 countries, while the GPS + Cellular variant will be available to order in 16 countries.

Apple iPhone XR The low-priced model iPhone XR sports a 6.1-inch LCD screen (with Liquid Retina Display) and is available in as many as six colour variants.
