  • Electoral officials pour ballot papers onto a table for counting in Harare Zimbabwe

Nelson Chamisa, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), the official opposition, insists he won the election, despite recent poll results indicating otherwise.

The party's supporters today went on rampage, protesting against the results of Monday's harmonised elections which saw Zanu PF winning two thirds majority in parliament. Chamisa tweeted Wednesday morning.

The BBC's Shingai Nyoka reports that the announcement on the presidential poll was not made because representatives of some of the 23 candidates had failed to turn up to verify the results.

For supporters of Zimbabwe's opposition MDC Alliance party, this was a day they had been dreading - the moment their dream of election victory was crushed.

The violence appeared to dash the hopes of Zimbabweans that the peaceful vote would lift them out of decades of economic and political stagnation under Mr Mugabe.

They also questioned delays in releasing the results of the presidential contest in Zimbabwe's first election since Robert Mugabe was forced to resign following a de facto coup in November after almost 40 years in power.

Home Affairs Minister Obert Mpofu said those who violated election rules by prematurely declaring victory risked incurring the "wrath of the law".

A Harare-based political analyst with Zimbabwe Democracy Institute, Pedzisai Ruhanya, said the results released so far could be a reflection of the will of the people but were not ideal.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police would like to confirm the unfortunate deaths of three people during the riots and melee which occurred in Harare Central business district", police spokeswoman Charity Charamba told state television.

The opposition has alleged irregularities, saying voting results were not posted outside one-fifth of polling stations as required by law.

The commission postponed announcing results of Monday's tightly fought presidential race, pitting Mr Mnangagwa against Mr Chamisa. "So far, it shows that the people of Zimbabwe have entrusted ZANU-PF to lead them and we will do our best to meet the people's wishes in the constituencies that elected us, stated", Nick Mangwana, ZANU-PF spokesman stated.

"You can't rig our election.this is a military government", the crowd shouted. We've more votes than ED [Emmerson Dambudzo].

The electoral commission warned that final results of the presidential first round may not be known until Friday or even Saturday. The uncertainty about the results had triggered fears among opposition activists that the government or the military could refuse to cede power if the Zanu-PF was defeated.

The most important thing for us now is to move beyond yesterday's tragic events, and to move forward, together.I am therefore calling for an independent investigation into what occurred in Harare yesterday.

"It is imperative that the results process is credible and transparent, with a full breakdown by polling station so that confidence in the outcome can be assured", Brok said.
