  • New study finds glyphosate in kids' cereals and snack bars

The study, carried out by the non-profit Environmental Working Group, found that 43 out of 45 popular breakfast cereals tested in three locations in the US contained traces of glyphosate.

Get breaking news alerts and special reports. Lowry says even organic products can contain pesticides. Producing healthy, wholesome food is Quaker's number one priority, and we've been doing that for more than 140 years. Glyphosate has a more than 40-year history of safe use.

While the cereals used in the study exceeded the Environmental Working Group standard, none of them come close to surpassing the EPA standard.

Washington, D.C. advocacy group the Environmental Working Group, which assesses chemicals in consumer products, released their results of a test conducted on popular American oat-based products - think like Cheerios, Lucky Charms, Kind Bars, Nature Valley bars, and others - after trying to determine whether they contained any herbicides.

For example, the FDA announced that Major Pharmaceuticals, Solco Healthcare, and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Inc. recalled their pillsfor heart failure and high blood pressure after finding a defect known to cause cancer.

Experts have criticized various court decisions punishing companies for making consumer products that people claim have caused cancer, including talcum powder.

The reliance of the USA company - and now, its German acquirer - on Roundup extends far beyond just selling it as a weed killer. So what happens is that glyphosate being one of the most common pesticides out there is you have what's called drift - where the other farms are spraying their crops with glyphosate.

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the World Health Organisation's cancer agency, concluded that glyphosate was "probably carcinogenic to humans".

The level considered safe to consume is 160 ppb. "The agency's assessment found no other meaningful risks to human health when the product is used according to the pesticide label", the EPA says.

Quaker and General Mills both told CBS News their products are safe and meet any regulatory safety standards.

The study says that the herbicide was even found in a few organic products. In the USA, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) labeled glyphosate a carcinogen in 1985, but reversed its position in 1991.

National Farmers Federation president Fiona Simson said the science on the safety of glyphosate was "clear and overwhelming" and the court had set a "reckless precedent". "Through the use of glyphosate, farmers are able to practise minimum tillage - protecting soil structure and nutrients and ultimately increasing the storage of soil carbon", she said. Quaker does not add glyphosate during any part of the milling process. "And essentially we're just throwing it at them".

Careful about giving your child Cheerios or Quaker Oats cereals. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory authorities in Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia, Korea, and elsewhere routinely review all approved pesticide products and have consistently reaffirmed that glyphosate does not cause cancer.
