  • The thieves stole two crowns and a royal orb known as a'riksapple from the ancient cathedral in Strangnas west

Two 17th-century crowns originally belonging to King Karl IX and Queen Kristina were stolen along with a royal orb, officials said.

Police tape is pictured at Strangnas Cathedral after thieves stole royal crowns from the 17th century, in Strangnas, Sweden July 31, 2018. The monarchs were initially buried with these crowns, but later exhumed, NBC News said.

He told the Swedish television channel, SVT: "I have talked to a person at the county administrative board that says that it is not possible to put an economic value on this, these are invaluable objects of national interest".

Shortly before noon on Tuesday, two men smashed the glass case, grabbed the items, and took off running, the Washington Post reported.

The objects were on display, but under lock and key, at the cathedral about 50 miles from Stockholm.

Police said the culprits swiped two gold crowns and a royal orb from the cathedral before fleeing via a speedboat which was moored under the church.

"I saw the boat was there, a white little boat with a motor on the back".

Officers believe that the thieves used a network of nearby lakes to make their escape, adding that authorities have used boats and helicopters to search the area, according to The Guardian.

Whether the thieves are able to sell the very conspicuous goodies on the black market remains to be seen.

"The score is 1-0 for them right now, but we don't know what it will be like tomorrow", Agnevik said.

The Swedish royal family have not spoken out about the heist. The other nine are the United Kingdom, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Liechtenstein, Monaco, and Luxembourg.
