Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told North Korea's foreign minister that the United States can not be trusted, Tehran's state media said, as the United States seeks a deal to rein in the North's nuclear and missile programmes.
North Korea will preserve its nuclear know-how despite its promise of denuclearisation to the United States, Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho said during a visit to Tehran, Iranian media reported on Thursday (Aug 9).
The United States was "attempting to invent a pretext for increased sanctions against the DPRK".
It continued: "Now, the issue in question is that going against the intention of President Trump to advance the DPRK - US relations, some high level officials within the US administration are making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the global sanctions and pressure".
"Expecting any result, while insulting the dialogue partner and throwing cold water over our honest efforts for building confidence which can be seen as a precondition for implementing the [North Korean]-U.S. joint statement, is indeed a foolish act that amounts to waiting to see a boiled egg hatch out", the statement read.
"However, the US responded to our expectation by inciting global sanctions and pressure".
Earlier on Thursday, North Korea's Rodong Sinmun said in a commentary that ending the Korean War is "the first process for ensuring peace and security not only in the Korean peninsula but also in the region and the world".
North Korean Foreign Minister Ri traveled this week to Iran, where President Hassan Rouhani told him the United States can not be trusted after the Trump administration reneged on a 2015 deal to lift sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's own nuclear program. "The U.S. should, even at this belated time, respond to our honest efforts in a corresponding manner".
Washington has said that sanctions will not be lifted until Pyongyang fully and finally dismantles its nuclear weapons.
On Wednesday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said that the United States was "not willing to wait for too long" for North Korea to take steps towards denuclearising.
"North Korea's strategic policy is to deepen relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and confront unilateralism", he said.
