  • Pompeo to unveil investment push in Indo-Pacific

The Trump administration on Monday announced $113.5 million in immediate United States funding to seed new strategic initiatives in the Indo-Pacific region to counter the Chinese threat - both in the economic and defence spheres.

"This trilateral partnership is in recognition that more support is needed to enhance peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region", Australia Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Tuesday in an emailed statement.

These sectors are foundations of the Indo-Pacific's economic future and the initiatives and funding are designed to accelerate USA private-sector investment in the region, support more job-creating United States export opportunities, and also to meet the region's needs for economic growth and development, Hook said, while declining to give details of the funds.

The U.S. "will not seek dominance in the Indo-Pacific, and will oppose any country that does", he said.

"When you look at the democracies spanning the Indo-Pacific region, from the US, India, Japan, and other very strong democracies that span the Indo Pacific, we share an interest in advancing security and prosperity in the region", Hook said.

Xie believes that America's new Indo-Pacific initiative will make the US presence in the region stronger and with clearer focus.

"I've said on many occasions that we welcome investment in the Pacific that adheres to global standards of transparency, accountability, engaging local workforces and ensuring that unsustainable debt isn't imposed on the recipient nations".

Pompeo said the United States has signed a $350 million investment compact with Mongolia to develop new sources of water supply. "So, the Chamber is a hosting this gathering as an effort to really bring together a lot of these different actors and different perspective and create some opportunities for that connections to be made", she said.
