  • UN peacekeepers return after 4 years to Israel-occupied Golan Heights near Syria

The Israeli broadcaster Hadeshot reported Monday night the Israeli government passed on the message to Putin via diplomatic channels but it remains to be seen if the Russians are willing to intervene when Assad cracks down on the refugees who are in majority opponents of the ruthless regime.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitoring group, confirmed fighting between Assad's forces and Islamic State on the Syrian-held Golan, which also abuts Jordan.

He said the Russian presence there was temporary, and that the observation posts would be handed over to Syrian regime forces once the situation stabilized.

Reflecting the return to normalcy in southern Syria, the UNDOF has announced that their observer forces are returning to the frontier between Quneitra and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Back on May 10, Israel conducted what it called its most intensive airstrikes on Syria in decades.

Russian military police also started patrolling the Golan Heights with United Nations peacekeepers, news agencies quoted Russia's Defense Ministry saying Thursday.

That message was conveyed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Russian President Vladimir Putin when they met in Moscow last month, a senior Israeli official said.

According to the Israel Defence Force (IDF) the men, believed to have belonged to a local Islamist rebel group affiliated to Isis, crossed into Israeli-controlled territory before 11pm. He said a preliminary assessment was that the infiltrators were Islamic State militants.

Israeli forces monitored the militants' movements before carrying out the strike, he said. The Syrian government says Israeli attacks are helping only terrorists and that the only Iranian troops on the ground in Syria are advisers helping the Syrian Arab Army fight jihadists.

Since Israel started its operation "Good Neighbor" in 2013 the IDF delivered tons of food, medicines and other humanitarian aid goods in Syria and has provided medical treatment to thousands of Syrians including 600 children who came to Israeli hospital accompanied by their mothers.

A series of blistering offensives backed by Moscow and Tehran has forced the rebels out of many of their strongholds, putting Assad's government back in control of almost two-thirds of the country.
