  • Trinamool Congress Protests Final NRC Draft in Rajya Sabha

Overwhelming majority of Indian media and politicians, including from ruling BJP, always unjustly mention the presence of a large of number of "illegal Bangladeshis" in Assam, but the central government in Delhi has never ever raised the issue during meetings at any level with Dhaka.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that the Indian citizens whose names are not included in Monday's list need not worry.

During a telephonic interview with news agency ANI from Dhaka, Information and Broadcasting Minister of Bangladesh Hasanul Haq Inu said, "Everyone knows it is a century-old ethnic conflict in the state of Assam".

A high alert has also been sounded along the Assam-Bengal border after the final draft of the NRC was released on Monday, by the Assam government.

Those whose names or the names of their descendants appeared in the NRC 1951 will be included in the final draft, which is expected to be released in December 2018. It comprised 1.9 crore names out of the total application of 3.29 crore people in Assam. "For the poor Indian citizens it may be a matter of life and death", Ajmal said. "But, still we are prepared so that nobody can come to Bangladesh illegally", he added. Almost all were Muslim and many were children. Numerous refugees settled in Assam, a state which now has more than 30 million people.

Rights groups have criticized the government move, saying deletion from citizenship lists was similar to Myanmar's removal of rights and protections for its Rohingya community in 1982. The mammoth three-year-long exercise to prove the identities of 33 million people across the hills, valleys and plains of this verdant state began two years ago.

"States have been asked to identify, isolate and work on deportation while coordinating with MEA", said Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Accusing the Centre of trying to forcibly evict 40 lakh people, she said, "It is a matter of grave concern".

Surjewala said that on one hand, Shah seeks "fake credit" for NRC in Assam, and on the other side, the Narendra Modi government brings in the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, "both of which are contrarian in spirit of one another". "I also urge people not to make any communal statements and remain watchful against falling prey to rumours". The NRC is being updated under the Supreme Court's supervision. He said, "There is no question of reference to Foreigners Tribunal or taking to detention camp on the basis of non-inclusion of name in draft NRC".

The much-awaited complete NRC draft was published today amid tight security.

He added: 'Adequate and ample scope will be given to people for making objections.
