  • North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho addresses the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly at U.N. headquarters Friday Sept. 23 2016

"Given the fact that the North Koreans reaffirmed that commitment to Secretary Pompeo last month, we fully expect that there might be an environment in which case they would be open to sitting down to negotiate", he said.

The White House said Thursday that President Donald Trump received a new letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un following up on their Singapore summit.

The U.S. military sent 200 boxes to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea in anticipation of the latest transfer, but North Korea handed over only 55 boxes, McKeague said, explaining that U.S. officials didn't know the specifics in advance.

A cursory examination at Wonsan confirmed that the remains were human, he said, and a closer look at Osan gave reason to believe they likely are Americans.

The country also agreed to return the remains of Americans killed in the Korean War.

The Defense Department agency that accounts for missing American service members from past wars hopes to negotiate the resumption of joint operations to recover remains in North Korea, an official said Thursday, calling such efforts a "sacred obligation".

If the United States and its allies move too quickly and make irreversible moves, then fail, such results will only benefit Kim Jong Un, Harris said.

Even Chrissy Teigen Has Had Enough of Thomas Markle
A royal expert claims Thomas Markle feels he has no choice but to go public with his family feud. The source said, "Kate's made a real effort to be kind to Meghan and to include her".

His comments came hours after Vice President Mike Pence presided over a ceremony in the state of Hawaii marking the repatriation of the 55 sets of remains to USA soil. US officials say they have already contacted the family of a service member whose dog tag was returned.

Byrd said the North Koreans at Wonsan provided what he described as a "short bit, a little paragraph of information" with each of the 55 boxes.

Still, an initial field forensic review indicated the "remains are what North Korea said they were", John Byrd, director of analysis for the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, told reporters at an air base in South Korea before the remains were flown to Hawaii. U.S. Marines also fought in the famous battle, but mainly along the reservoir's western side.

Byrd cautioned that. "at this point, at least, there's no way to tell" how many more sets of remains the North Koreans might already have in their possession.

The remains were formally repatriated Tuesday in Osan, South Korea to to the control of the United Nations before being transported to Hawaii, where the DPAA's identification laboratory is located. The first step, he said, is sampling the bones for DNA that potentially could be matched with DNA samples that have been provided over the years by relatives of Korean War MIAs.

Investigators will also use dental records and chest x-rays to further analyze the remains for a possible identification.

A US defense official told VOA North Korea has provided nearly no information to help identify the individuals, and that the process could take months or years to complete. -North Korean searches of battlefields and POW camp graveyards as occurred from 1996 to 2005.
