On Thursday, a gunman opened fire on the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland, killing at least five people. He has a bail review Friday at the Annapolis District Courthouse at 10:30 a.m.

"We want [the attack] to be something people don't forget", Buckley said Monday during a visit to the temporary Capital Gazette newsroom. It prompted New York City police to immediately tighten security at news organizations in the nation's media capital. Ramos, who represented himself in the suit, lost both the initial case and an appeal in 2015.

Anne Arundel County Police Chief Timothy Altomare told Fox News he knew each of the victims.

Journalists crawled under desks and sought other hiding places as he moved about the newswroom, describing agonizing minutes of terror as they heard the gunman's footsteps and the repeated blasts of the shotgun.

Journalists Wendy Winters, 65, Gerald Fischman, 61, and John McNamara, 56, as well as sales assistant Rebecca Smith, 34, were also killed.

In an editorial Sunday, the Gazette said it would never forget the avalanche of love. The newspaper said two other employees had non-life threatening injuries and were later released from a hospital.

Early Friday morning one reporter, Phil Davis, tweeted out a screen grab of the suspect's court documents and wrote "I can't sleep, so I'll do the only thing I can and report".

"Yesterday was an incredibly tragic day for our colleagues in Annapolis - a tragedy felt deeply by all of us at our papers across the country", Dearborn wrote in a letter to the company. "I remember telling our attorneys, 'This is a guy who is going to come in and shoot us, '" Marquardt said in the publication's sister newspaper, the Baltimore Sun. "He wrote a lot of warm pieces", Altomare said, emphasizing that "all of them were consummate professionals, and although on occasion we might disagree, they always tried to get both sides of the story out".

"'She stopped writing back and told him to stop, but he continued".

"I'll enjoy seeing @capgaznews cease publication, but it would be nicer to see Hartley and Marquardt cease breathing", he posted on February 2, 2015.

Somehow, they managed to put out the paper while grieving for their friends who died only hours before and working around the fact that their office was an active crime scene.

In the immediate aftermath of Thursday's shooting, Mr. Trump posted to Twitter that his thoughts and prayers were with the victims and their families.

"I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the courageous journalists who stepped up to cover such a hard and personal news story", Dearborn wrote.

His press secretary, Ms Sarah Sanders, described the incident as an attack on "innocent journalists".

Trump also said that "journalists, like all Americans, should be free from the fear of being violently attacked while doing their job".

"To the families of the victims, there are no words to express our sorrow for your loss", he said. "The only question was, who would he get first".

"Today, we are speechless", the page said.

Ramos filed a defamation lawsuit, but a judge dismissed the case, finding that Ramos could not point to a single statement in the article that was false. "And it can not give rise to a defamation suit", Judge Lamasney said at a hearing on the case on March 29, 2013.

Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said the community is grieving.
