North Korean leader Kim Jong Un praised Donald Trump in a letter after last month's summit in Singapore, saying the USA president's "energetic and extraordinary efforts" in reshaping relations between the two countries will help create a "new future" for both sides.
Trump shared the letter in a tweet Thursday, writing, "A very nice note from Chairman Kim of North Korea".
Mr. Pompeo denied that the talks went poorly, telling pool reporters that progress was made "in every element of our discussions".
North Korea has long trumpeted a denuclearization goal, but one that it sees as a lengthy process of undefined multilateral disarmament on the entire Korean peninsula, rather than a unilateral dismantlement of its nuclear arsenal.
"I deeply appreciate the energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr. President for the improvement of relations between the two countries and the faithful implementation of the joint statement", he adds. Pyongyang has asked the UN Command Armistice Commission to upgrade the talks to a higher level to include a US general, South Korea's foreign ministry said.
Ever since Trump's summit with Kim in Singapore, critics have slammed the president for not doing more to challenge Kim, elevating a dictator on the global stage, and touting a pact the two leaders signed which doesn't provide any solid agreement for a denuclearization plan.
