Cpl. Joseph Maciel of South Gate, California, died July 7, 2018, in Tarin Kowt District, Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan from wounds sustained during an apparent insider attack. USA military officials at the top US military headquarters in Kabul could not immediately be reached for additional comment.

Maciel's honors include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon, the Columbus, Ga., newspaper site says.

A statement issued by the Resolute Support Mission on Saturday said two other United States service members were wounded but in a stable condition.

"Our prayers are with his family and friends during this hard time", Conner said in the statement.

The secretary of state asserted that the Taliban understands USA resolve and is "beginning to see that they can not wait us out".

The Taliban released a statement on Twitter saying an Afghan soldier fired on US troops in the province of Uruzgan, AFP reported.

The number of insider attacks peaked at 61 in 2012, but the attacks have become rare after the USA military instituted security safeguards to protect American troops.

Following a three-day ceasefire during last month's Eid holiday, the Taliban, fighting to restore their version of strict Islamic law, have so far rejected Ghani's offer of talks, demanding the withdrawal of global troops from Afghanistan. But as NPR's David Welna reported last week, a "public information blackout" by the Trump administration has meant that, "since late a year ago, the Pentagon's stopped posting those numbers for Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan".
