Pompeo Brings 'Rocket Man' CD for Kim Jong

  • US Marines help a wounded buddy on the Naktong River front in South Korea in 1950

President Donald Trump used to taunt North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as "Little Rocket Man" for his frequent missile tests.

The South Koreans will play against the North Korean men's and women's teams on Thursday before returning home on Friday.

The South Korean government's efforts with North Korea have proven remarkably popular with its public. If the nuclear talks bog down, it could mean curtains for inter-Korean detente. DPRK are the initials for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

But following talks on Sunday between USA envoy Sung Kimand North Korean counterparts, this "CVID" language appears to have disappeared from the State Department lexicon.

And ultimately, that relationship doesn't lie in the hands of South Koreans, but with the American and North Korean interlocutors. Satellite imagery captured on June 21 suggests the North is continuing to upgrade infrastructure at its Yongbyon nuclear scientific research centre. Perhaps most importantly there are U.S. Ambassador Sung Kim, who has led the team of negotiators that hammered out Trump and Kim's joint declaration and met again this past Sunday at the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, and CIA Korea Mission Chief Andy Kim, who has been Pompeo's right-hand man on this issue since his time as CIA Director. During their summit, the U.S. and North Korean delegations watched a four-minute video, made in the style of a Hollywood trailer, setting out the North's stark choice: conflict with a powerful enemy or a peaceful and prosperous future as America's (denuclearised) partner.

Pompeo will leave Pyongyang Saturday and head for Tokyo, where he will meet with Korean and Japanese foreign ministers to share the outcome of his meetings in the North.

South Korea will try to stay in lockstep with the United States if the diplomacy hits a rough patch.

It is to be seen whether the follow-up talks may produce a timeline for the process and an agreement on North Korea's nuclear facilities, a crucial step to enable verification of dismantlement.

Citing sources in Washington, The Chosun Ilbo newspaper reports that the presents - the other of which is a letter from the USA president - reflect Mr Trump's expectation that Mr Kim will follow through on the denuclearisation pledge he made during their summit in Singapore last month.

Pompeo's talks with Kim were expected to last a "couple of hours" and it's unlikely he'll meet Kim Jong Un.

"Since the summit the consultations have continued".

While Pompeo has dismissed questions about "semantics" as both insulting and ludicrous, North Korea analysts note that it shows a large gap between the two sides, one that the administration can not paper over for long.

Moon, the son of North Korean war refugees, has vowed to build on the legacies of former Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun.

The North Korean leader is believed to have spent more than ten years at schools in and around Bern, and requested his favourite fried rösti potatoes to be served at a recent summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Some officials in the State and Defence Departments and in US intelligence agencies are anxious that Trump has put himself at a disadvantage by overstating the results of the Singapore summit.
