The Met Office has issued a level 3 amber alert for the East Midlands with the heatwave set to return.

Western and northern areas will be "pleasantly warm" in the mid-twenties Celsius, though across Northern Ireland and western Scotland the slightly cooler weather may be accompanied by occasionally cloudy skies, Mr Ramsdale said.

Frances O'Grady, its general secretary, said: "It's no fun working in a baking office or factory".

Further north, Dundee's sunshine will disappear by around 2pm this afternoon, replaced by cloud and possible heavy showers for the rest of the day.

The warning now covers the East, Southeast, West Midlands and East Midlands.

The National Farmers Union said it would hold a summit with government officials and other farming bodies on August 1 to discuss how to mitigate the effect of the unusually hot, dry weather, which is forecast to continue.

A statement on their website said: "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. Parts of southern England have seen only 6%".

That is not to say today is the end of the heat, with a scorching day predicted across England and the 2003 record of 38.5 degrees perhaps at risk of being broken.

Temperatures of 37C (99F) have been forecast in southern, eastern and central England for Friday.

"Parts of East Anglia and Lincolnshire could see the most intense rainfall".

"For some places, easily up to 35, 36, and 37 is possible".

Spray and sudden flooding could also lead to hard driving conditions and some road closures.

Up to 1in of rain could land in the space of an hour as the poor weather moves into the area.

"Large hailstones also problematic and lots of lightning flashes".

However, temperatures today are expected to peak above 30°C again, before dipping overnight.

Tony Wafer, RNLI community safety manager, said: "If you are heading to the coast this weekend, please find out where your nearest lifeguarded beach is and ask the lifeguards for advice on conditions, especially if you are going in the water". It will be fresher, but there will be weather fronts.
