  • Trump weighs top picks for Supreme Court amid last-minute maneuvering

Trump introduced Kavanaugh as "a judge's judge" and cited his "proven commitment to equal justice under the law" in his announcement Monday night live from the East Room of the White House.

"He's a brilliant jurist with a clear and effective writing style, universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time". His first, Justice Neil Gorsuch was confirmed to the high court in April 2017.

Brett Kavanaugh of Washington, D.C. A report earlier Monday said Trump was focused on Circuit Court Judges Brett Kavanaugh and Thomas Hardiman. None is older than 53, meaning they could sit on the court for decades, allowing Trump to make a lasting imprint on the nation's laws. "A judge must interpret statutes as written and a judge must interpret the constitution as written", Kavanaugh said during the ceremony in which he underscored his ties to his family and his Roman Catholic faith.

Kavanaugh's pedigree and conservative judicial record won over Trump, probably more than his stint as staff secretary to former President George W. Bush.

But she is also seen as potentially hard to confirm, given the narrowness of the Senate GOP majority, the previous controversy in her confirmation process when she was nominated for the federal bench a year ago, her lack of a deep judicial record of opinions and her openness to overturning Roe v. Wade.

Besides records from his 12 years as an appellate judge, Kavanaugh was a top adviser to President George W. Bush and worked for Kenneth Starr on the years-long Whitewater investigation into Bill and Hillary Clinton.

"The indictment and trial of a sitting President, moreover, would cripple the federal government, rendering it unable to function with credibility in either the worldwide or domestic arenas", Kavanaugh wrote in a 2012 piece titled "Separation of Powers During the FortyFourth Presidency and Beyond" for the Minnesota Law Review.

"What the administration is seeking is to transform the face of the entire federal judiciary", said Nan Aron, president of Alliance for Justice, a liberal group that tracks court issues. McConnell said he will push for a vote on the nomination before the November midterms. A Ronald Reagan nominee, Kennedy joined the high court in February 1988. His staunch conservatism ensures stiff Democratic resistance.

However, she lost her way after that and went a set and 4-0 down before recomposing herself and taking it to a third. Nadal will be up against the promising Alex de Minaur, who beat Pierre Hugues Herbert 6-2, 6-7 (8), 7-5, 6-3.

Kennedy, a Republican appointee, often voted with the court's liberal members in cases involving abortion rights, gay rights and affirmative action.

His pick will have a tough nomination battle ahead of them, with Republicans holding onto a single seat majority in the Senate, with John McCain ill and possibly unable to participate in the confirmation process. Luther Strange, cutting the GOP's Senate majority to 51-49. Still, Republicans can only lose one vote. The "Sherpa", or person guiding the nominee through that process, has not yet been confirmed.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein said Trump's choice "could have a bigger effect on Americans' daily lives than any justice in our lifetime".

"This is a nightmare for red-state Democrats to oppose a highly qualified nominee, and all four of these people are highly qualified, been on the court, know what they're doing, mainstream judges", Graham said.

But Schumer said on the Senate floor that the nominee's appreciation of precedent as settled law would not be sufficient, and that they should be questioned about Roe specifically.

Trump also hopes to pressure several Democrats into voting to confirm his nominee.

As soon as Kennedy announced his retirement plans on June 27, Democrats mobilized, arguing that anyone Trump selects would be hand-picked to help roll back abortion rights, Affordable Care Act protections, same-sex marriage, and scores of other decisions that have shaped modern America - while ruling in favor of corporations and against under-represented minorities.

He added, "For 30 years we'll be talking about the Trump-McConnell courts and their impact".
