Endurance man Anderson downs Isner in ultra marathon to reach final

His ultramarathon loss to Kevin Anderson, by that score and over all those hours, in the Wimbledon semifinals on Friday amounted to the longest Grand Slam singles semifinal in tennis history.
Anderson became the first South African male to reach the final since 1921 with a 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-7 (9), 6-4, 26-24 victory on Centre Court.
Isner won the longest match in tennis history, defeating Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set of the first round at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships.
Assuming Anderson is able to walk and raise his serving arm, Sunday will make his second major final appearance after the 2017 US Open, when he lost in straight sets to Nadal.
Anderson will need to continue waiting to find out his next opponent, as Friday's later semifinal between second-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal and 12th-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic was suspended after three sets due to darkness.
One key area in which Anderson held the edge throughout was in unforced errors, as Isner committed 59 to just 24 for Anderson. He saved three set points in the tiebreaker, then converted his second set point when Nadal netted a backhand.
Anderson finished the match with 49 aces and 118 winners; Isner had 53 aces and 129 winners. The American roared and turned to his box as he took the third set on his third set point. Isner took that set on his third chance, when Anderson flubbed a forehand. I don't know. They're getting on the court at 20:15, whatever it is.
A 19th ace of the match bailed American Isner out of a potentially hard situation.
Repeatedly, the answer was, of course, "No", even when Anderson held break points at 7-all, 10-all and 17-all.

Anderson had nearly surely forced the game back to deuce with a close-range dink over the net, but a exhausted Isner somehow stormed across the court to slam home a passing victor. "My left heel is killing me", said Isner.
After the exhausting quarter-final against Juan Martin del Potro, which was just a minute shorter than his classic 2008 final against Roger Federer, Nadal appeared remarkably fresh during a drama-filled third set as both players pounded the ball in a baseline duel. "My left heel is killing me and I have an bad blister on my right foot".
But only one of these men can move through to take on Anderson on Sunday, and they will resume on Saturday, when ticket holders for the women's final will get an unexpected treat.
