  • Uruguay's Diego Godin holds the key to locking out Cristiano Ronaldo

Edinson Cavani scored twice to lead Uruguay to a 2-1 win over Cristiano Ronaldo and European champion Portugal in the round of 16 at the World Cup.

Uruguay will play France in their quarter-final on Friday.

22 - Luis Suarez gets a free kick outside the box and almost gets it to go but Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio makes a nice save.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez was complimentary of Ronaldo and the rest of the Portugal squad, noting several times Uruguay will be facing the reigning champions of Europe.

"A rivalry with Ronaldo here (at the World Cup) and at a club level are two different things".

Clearly influenced by the methods of Diego Simeone at club level, the pair have been an impenetrable force throughout the tournament, although Pepe did find the net with the first goal Uruguay have conceded in Russian Federation to this point.

Despite being one of just five teams to have won the World Cup a few times and boasting two of the finest strikers in European soccer in its attack, Uruguay flew under most people's radar heading into the World Cup.

Wow, what a spectacle in the first knockout game at this World Cup as France produced a stunning display to send Messi's Argentina packing.

38 - Another try for Portugal on the header from Goncalo Guedes but it's saved by Uruguayan goalie Fernando Muslera.

The dogs strutted their stuff for a panel of judges who selected the very finest specimen from the monstrous mutts. Last year's victor was a 125-pound gentle giant named Martha - a Neopolitan Mastiff with gas and a droopy face.

Cavani switched play with a long cross to Luis Suarez and continued his run to head home a pinpoint deep cross from his attacking partner and give Uruguay a seventh-minute lead.

That was the first goal Uruguay had conceded in the tournament but it took Cavani only seven minutes to put them back ahead at the packed Fisht Stadium.

A narrow victory against Morocco was their only win in their first three matches and they will have to improve against Uruguay, who are unlikely to allow spaces behind their defence.

However, Cavani struck a well-placed shot in the 62nd minute to ensure that Portugal moves on to the quarter finals.

Edinson Cavani celebrates after scoring for Uruguay against Portugal. Meanwhile, three of Portugal's last four goals have come from outside the box.

The World Cup match between Uruguay and Portugal will be broadcast live on Fox.

Given their ages - Messi is 31 and Ronaldo 33 - this could be the last the world sees of the pair, who have monopolised the world player of the year award for the last 10 years, on the biggest stage of all.

Messi left wondering on the world stage again.
