  • Rajnath Singh Asks Opposition Not to Politicise 'Sensitive' NRC Issue

Criticising the Centre over the final draft of NRC, Mamata Banerjee said that they can not push the people back into the dark hole.

Under the BJP government, which came to power in 2016, some 15,000 people were declared foreigners past year alone - which means more than 1,000 per month.

State NRC Coordinator, while releasing the list in front of the media said that people who were not included in the list can make claims and objections, as reported by ANI.

But critics claim the measure is part of a wider campaign to target the country's Muslim minority.

Suban was seated with his wife at their house a few hundred meters from a vast paddy field where, in 1983, scores of people were chased down and killed by machete-armed mobs intent on hounding out Muslim immigrants. The NRC of 1951 was challenged in the Gauhati High Court, which in 1970 ruled that it was not admissible as evidence of citizenship.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party, which came to power in the state in 2016, says the new citizenship test aims to protect ethnic Assamese and crack down on illegal migration. We are anxious because people are being made refugees in their own country. Almost all were Muslim, and many were children.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is the list of Indian citizens of Assam.

The arrival of millions of refugees to Assam in 1971 - when Bangladesh seceded from Pakistan after a bloody civil war - brought the issue of these so-called foreigners into national focus. Descendants of those who can prove they were Indian citizens till March 24, 1971 are also on the NRC list.

The list aims to identify every resident who can demonstrate roots in the state before March 1971.

"I had submitted all requisite documents", he said. They settled in Assam, which borders the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan to the north and Bangladesh to the south and is home to several rebel groups. Assam Accord was signed between the Centre and state government in 1985 that promised identification and deportation of illegal immigrants.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that the Indian citizens whose names are not included in Monday's list need not worry.

The CM, who is leaving for Delhi today, said she would seek time from Union home minister Rajnath Singh to discuss the issue.

Supreme Court of India has been supervising the entire process.

Tensions between Assam's indigenous tribes and Bengali-speaking Muslims have led to outbreaks of deadly violence in the past. It was agreed that all foreigners who had entered Assam between 1951 and 1961 would be given full citizenship.

Thirty-six years after losing his parents, sister and a four-year-old daughter in one of India's worst sectarian massacres, Abdul Suban says he is still trying to prove he's a citizen of the Hindu-majority nation.
