Canada slapped the US with tariffs on over $12 billion worth of goods Sunday as the country celebrates Canada Day.

Canada's Freeland called the idea of auto tariffs "absolutely absurd".

Canadian tariffs on more than 100 USA goods went into effect on Sunday, as a retaliatory effort against similar measures imposed by the United States.

Although Trump has previously been persuaded to back off trade threats based on the fact that they would hurt states that supported him in the 2016 presidential election, he has taken a more aggressive tack in recent months.

As part of his combative America First approach, Trump has repeatedly attacked the trade policies of the United States' northern neighbour, citing Canada's triple-digit tariffs on dairy products, which account for only about 0.1 per cent of U.S.

He said he could quickly sign an agreement with Mexico and Canada, "but I'm not happy with it".
