Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel landed a blow in the Formula One world championship by winning rival Lewis Hamilton's home British Grand Prix in a dramatic Silverstone race on Sunday.

Hamilton was spun round at the first corner by Vettel's Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, but turned in a masterful display, and took advantage of two safety auto periods to finish behind Vettel.

When asked about the incident in the post-race press conference, he said: "All I'll say there's now two races the Ferraris have taken out one of the Mercedes. Sometimes we talk nonsense and we learn from this".

The four-time F1 world champion from Hertfordshire claimed his 76th career pole position, beating Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel in P2 by 44 thousandths.

Their fierce rivalry on the track spilled over into a war of words in the paddock as Lewis Hamilton railed against what he called "interesting tactics" after a Ferrari collided with a Mercedes for the second time in three races at Sunday's British Grand Prix.

Later, after removing the post, and when addressing a fan who defended Hamilton, she added: "Just to be clear, I was not talking about the driver but the team who was crying afterwards that someone did something on goal". Ferrari now lead the constructors' standings by 20 points, proving their greater consistency as a team over 10 of the 21 season races so far. According to the Mercedes boss, his technical director James Allison labelled the contacts at Silverstone and Paul Ricard, where Vettel hit the second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas at the start as "either deliberate or the results of incompetence".

"Thank you for loving me for being with all my flaws", the 33-year-old wrote on Instagram.

Raikkonen crossed the line ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who had led with only five laps of the race remaining. "We need to position ourselves better so we're not exposed to the red cars because who knows where they are going to be".

When finally the race got back underway at the end of lap 41 Vettel and Bottas sparred, with the German applying extreme pressure with his fresh tyres but the Finn getting his elbows out in defence.

'I lost almost 3kg trying to get back to the top today for you and for my team, ' he told his followers. "Le Castellet (French GP) was the first time we got taken out and this is the second".

"He (Allison) should be ashamed of himself because he worked for many years at Maranello", Arrivabene said.

"We're here in England sometimes they want to teach us how to be gentlemen, he should start first. A thing that they (Mercedes) haven't done". "If in two years we still feel the same about each other, then it would be clear that we will continue". "I deserve it, I took the 10 seconds and got fighting".

Lewis Hamilton on track at Silverstone ahead of the 2018 British Grand Prix.

"I would have loved for us to build a gap in Austria, Montreal and Silverstone because we lose some in Hungary and we lose some in Singapore", he added.
