New figures from Pew's latest survey show that YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat - in that order - are the most popular online platforms among United States teens ages 13 to 17.

This weekend you would have seen New Zealand news outlets saying 45% of teens were online, and Facebook was fading... according to Pew Research center, and while this is true for U.S. teens it's not so much for NZ teens. YouTube was not included in the survey in 2015.

Facebook usage lags behind rivals such as YouTube, where 85% of teens say they spend their time.

"The news has to be concerning to Facebook, although some of the exodus is for Instagram, which is also owned by the company", said Greg Sterling, vice president of strategy and insights at the Local Search Association. Youtube does not even come in the same category as that of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram. That being said, the survey poses no doubt in the sharp drop of kids using Facebook from seventy-one percent to fifty-one percent, as estimated from the year 2015. Pew reports that 95 percent of teens can get their hands on such a device these days - a 22 percent surge from 2014-15. Ninety-five percent of teens have access to a smartphone in 2018.

According to the game enthusiast, Fallout 76's Vault 76 came as a surprise because it has not been revealed in the past games. However, three anonymous Kotaku sources said the game is an online survival RPG that's heavily inspired by DayZ and Rust .

Thanks to nearly universal access to smartphones, nearly half of American teenagers surveyed say they use the internet "almost constantly", according to Pew. Only 24 percent said the social media use had a mostly negative effect on their lives.

But despite being online all day, every day, teens are divided on whether or not their relationships with social media are a good thing. One of the platforms that are missing from the most recent survey is Vine. These mobile connections are in turn fuelling more-persistent online activities: 45 per cent of teens now say they are online on a near-constant basis.

Lower income teens are much more likely to use Facebook than their wealthy peers. Only 24 per cent said it has mostly a negative impact, while 31per cent said it's mostly positive.

Pew notes in the report that the wording of some of the questions changed in between the two studies and that YouTube was not given as an option in the 2015 study.
