But on Wednesday, an emotional Mr Babchenko appeared before reporters saying he had been part of a special Ukrainian operation to thwart a Russian attempt on his life, and that he was fine.

The SBU said it received information about a plot to kill 30 people in Ukraine, including Babchenko, but had thwarted it.

Arkady Babchenko's wife reportedly told authorities she believed he was shot because of his professional work.

The astonishing turn of events brought harsh criticism from Russian Federation and the global media advocacy group Reporters Without Borders.

Babchenko used his time in the press conference to apologize to his loved ones for putting them through the pain of grieving for his death. "It is always deeply risky for states to play with the facts".

The 41-year-old's death stunned colleagues and added to tension between Moscow and Kyiv, whose ties have been badly damaged by Russia's seizure of Crimea and backing for separatist militants in a devastating war in eastern Ukraine.

Some liberals drew parallels with the case of Russian former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter who were targeted with a potent nerve agent in Britain in March.

"The logic is the same - to defame Russia", Kosachev told the state news agency Tass. He then confused everyone there by inviting the supposed victim into the room.

"We are relieved that #ArkadyBabchenko is alive", it said.

The Committee to Protect Journalists in NY said on Twitter that "Ukrainian authorities should conduct a swift and thorough investigation" into Babchenko's murder.

Weakened but still wet, Alberto moves inland
Alberto was more of a rainstorm than a wind threat, but the National Weather Service said at least one tornado had been confirmed. It could deliver up to 6 inches of rain in some areas as it moves toward lower MI by Wednesday evening, officials said.

The unidentified man in turn allegedly hired an acquaintance to be the gunman, Gritsak said.

"Everything is over from yesterday", Mr Babchenko said. He repeatedly said he faced death threats.

"The operation took two months to prepare".

"They came to me a month ago".

Arkady Babchenko, a Russian journalist who had recently been reported dead in Kiev, showed up at a press conference Wednesday to reveal that he is actually very much alive.

A number of Kremlin critics have been killed in Ukraine in recent years, with one gunned down on a Kiev street in broad daylight and another whose vehicle exploded.

The journalist quit Russia after pro-Kremlin supporters launched a campaign of intimidation and harassment after he wrote on Facebook he was not sorry when a plane transporting a Russian military choir crashed into the Black Sea en route to Syria in December 2016.

Russia's foreign ministry said it was "glad" Babchenko was still alive, but also said the story had a "propaganda effect", according to Russian news agency Interfax.

Following the announcement of Mr Babchenko's faked assassination, Ukrainian prosecutor general Yuri Lutsenko lashed out at Ukrainian politicians and civil groups who accused the government of allowing contract killings to happen.
