  • Canada votes to legalise cannabis for recreational use

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Wednesday that recreational marijuana will become legal in Canada on October 17.

Marijuana legalization has overcome its last hurdle and we'll see legal pot sales in eight to 12 weeks as all that's left is for the provinces to get ready for the sale and distribution of cannabis.

Effective October 17th, Canada will legalize recreational marijuana throughout the country.

It is likely that by mid-September, Canadians will be able to buy cannabis and cannabis oil grown by licensed producers at various retail locations.

On CTV's Power Play, Bill Blair, the government's point person on pot, said the date was extended after discussions with the provinces and territories.

The federal government's legislation to legalize and regulate recreational marijuana has received Royal Assent, meaning the bill has officially passed Parliament.

Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

Canada is now the largest developed country to end a nationwide prohibition on marijuana use.

Trudeau made the legalization of marijuana a major campaign promise, and he contends that the status quo enables youth to acquire marijuana too easily and encourages criminal activity. Uruguay was the first to embrace this concept. "We would like to commend the fearless advocates who spent years building momentum for all Canadians who participated in turning an idea into reality, this is your moment to celebrate".

Bill C-46, a companion bill that Wilson-Raybould predicts will give Canada the strongest impaired-driving rules in the world, will also become law "in the near future", she said.

For each gram of cannabis sold at or below USD 10, a Can USD 1 excise tax will be imposed, and distributed between the federal government (receiving a quarter of the funds) and the provinces.

"There's a law that was duly passed in Quebec and that's the law of the province", she said.

Expect a lot of stories to come out about these debates, and keep in mind to get out to Quebec's election this fall and ensure our provincial government won't fall into the hands of politicians vocally against the Cannabis Act of Canada. By comparison, the minimum consumption age for marijuana in all the USA states that have legalized recreational use is 21, corresponding to the higher drinking age.

Conservative Senator Larry Smith chastised the government for "failing to educate" children about the dangers of cannabis use ahead of legalisation.

According to a column in Globe and Mail written by Andre Picard, there were more than 55,000 cannabis related charges against Canadians just in 2016 in which 76 percent were for possession of marijuana.
