Apple today announced new tools built into iOS 12 to help customers understand and take control of the time they spend interacting with their iOS devices.

"Apps beg us to use our phone when we should be doing something else", Craig Federighi, the company's senior vice president of software engineering, said at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Jose, California.

Users can then set time usage limits per app, giving them a notification if they reach a daily time usage limit. Based on this data, individuals can set up time restrictions for specific apps, websites, or categories of apps.

Most predictably, Apple has a new feature coming called screen time.

Other features inlude "limit distraction" which would turn-off lock screen notifications at bedtimes to avoid "getting spun up" by prompts when perhaps one just wants to check the time.

The new iOS 12 software that powers the iPhone and iPad was revealed during the company's annual developers conference.

The Photos app will use more artificial intelligence to help users search for photos, as well as share them with friends recognised in images. Many were quick to roll their eyes at Apple's new Animoji and Memoji-the company's apparent take on the popular Bitmoji. A public beta will also be available to iOS users to try out these features later this month.

Apple's interest in augmented reality (AR) is not a secret and with iOS 12, Apple will be introducing ARKit 2, an improvement over its predecessor which according to Apple, will allow developers to create shared experiences. It's smart stuff and we're glad to see Apple pick this up for iOS 12, as notifications have arguably been one of iOS' biggest weaknesses for quite some time.

Apple didn't announce new computers at WWDC this year, but it did talk a lot about software on both desktops and mobile.

Animoji, the company's animated emoji which track a user's face, has been updated to include new animals, as well as the ability to detect if the person is sticking their tongue out. This year, Apple is bringing that functionality to a first-party app in iOS 12 called Measure. Even better, Safari will warn users when they reuse the same password at multiple sites.

The tech giant said updates mean the new operating system will run up to 40% on all devices, including older ones compatible for the update.

The FaceTime video calling app can now also support group video calls for up to 32 people. Support for Apple Podcasts is coming with watchOS 5, too, letting you automatically sync new episodes to your watch.

To more cheers from developers, Apple also announced a redesigned Mac App Store for the Mojave update, expanding a new look the company introduced to iPhones and iPads a year ago. In Safari, enhanced Intelligent Tracking Prevention helps block social media "Like" or "Share" buttons and comment widgets from tracking users without permission.

Another improved aspect is the Photos app which gets an extra "For You" tab.
