Apple bans cryptocurrency mining on iPhones

  • Fears of battery drain make Apple ban cryptocurrency mining

"Apps, including any third party advertisements displayed within them, may not run unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining", Apple said. The new rules restrict apps that generate excess heat, pull unnecessary system resources, or otherwise drain battery or affect performance unnecessarily. Apple's updates to the App Store guidelines now prohibit developers from making databases of info gleaned from address books, nor can they request access to contact info under one pretense and then use it for something else - they have to get consent for what they're actually using it for.

Now, the guidelines specify more than that.

It's also worth noting that Apple's move explicitly targets apps intended for cryptocurrency mining and others which drain your device's battery rapidly.

Apple's concerns about cryptocurrency mining stem from power efficiency.

Amazon to show 20 Premier League matches a season from 2019

In terms of what Apple will allow, cryptocurrency wallet apps are still allowed, "provided they are offered by developers enrolled as an organization".

The updated guidelines, posted last week, are found in the Hardware Compatibility and Cryptocurrencies sections of the document. For instance, apps facilitating any exchange or transfer of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin were mandated to abide in compliance with all federal and relevant state laws of its offering.

Moreover, Apple is also barring apps from crypto mining activity done within the device. News about Apple's changes to the App Store aren't likely to play particularly well. Initial offerings including futures investments, or other securities dealing with cryptocurrencies must be offered by an established bank, securities firm or exchange. Exchanges can offer fully-featured apps offering trading abilities, as long as the apps are issued by the exchanges themselves and not third parties.

The new Apple Books app launches this fall, with the Book Store available in 51 countries, and free books available in 155 countries. In a dedicated cryptocurrency section, the company goes on to break down in more detail what is - and, crucially, is not - permissible.
