US Justice Dept. Opens Probe Into Cambridge Analytica

  • Facebook is suspending about 200 apps it believes may have misused data

However, its head said that they lacked the detail they were looking for.

The committee had issued a letter containing 39 questions to Facebook, which were answered by the company's Chief technology Officer Mike Schroepfer in lieu of Zuckerberg.

According to the committee, it will be writing to Facebook again in the coming days to address the significant gaps that exist in the company's answers.

The committee said Facebook's latest responses to these questions do not fully answer each point with sufficient detail or data evidence.

The FBI and the Department of Justice are investigating Cambridge Analytica, the now-defunct data firm involved in a massive data breach in March, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Facebook has now suspended the myPersonality app (and around 200 other similar apps) in its efforts to investigate apps that may have violated its data privacy policies. Those changes, according to Facebook, significantly reduced the amount of data that apps could access. The American official told the Times investigators have also contacted Facebook as a part of the probe.

In another case linked to an online personality quiz misusing data of Facebook users, the data of a further three million people was available on an unprotected website that could have been accessed by unauthorised parties.

Aside from the data set, the application was also able to collect information from around 22 million status updates from more than 150,000 users.

Select committees rarely formally summon witnesses to appear, but did formally summon Cambridge Analytica CEO Alexander Nix after he refused to appear before the DCMS committee to clarify previous testimony.

UK Parliament roars: Oi!

During his evidence session, Schroepfer said this was at the request of "people" in these countries, who wanted to work with a local regulator rather than Facebook Ireland.

In the end, the only tried and tested solution to social network privacy problems is to limit one's presence altogether.

"We suspended the myPersonality app nearly a month ago because we believe that it may have violated Facebook's policies", Mr Archibong said on Monday in response to an AFP inquiry.
